that made me chuckle balloonsayer

I know a little Jewish 2 year old girl called Noa. It is a cute name and really suits her but I guess a lot of people hear it as Noah and think 'Why'?

fiveweeksandcounting · 26/05/2010 16:23

Gorgeous and quite widely used in Israeli and jewish families.

oooh i normally don't really like names like that but Sailor is quite cool!

sedgiebaby · 26/05/2010 20:29

seeker: No. I hope she will have the confidence to handle herself around ignorance, whatever that ignorance might be, and plain name or different name, it will come, even if on a trivial message board.

It's academic anyway I'm not using Noah I was asking who liked it, not who disliked it.

Don't like it for boy or girl.

I was a very sensitive and shy child-I just couldn't have handled Noa or Noah-unfortunately you don't know whether your DD will have the confidence to carry it off.

mathanxiety · 26/05/2010 23:07

Wasn't Sailor Moon a Japanese cartoon?

Sedgiebaby - you started it.

And, actually, it's not ignorant to think that Noah is a boy's name!

chaya5738 · 27/05/2010 12:58

I absolutely love it. I wanted to called our DD it but it doesn't go with our last name.

Noah, the boy's name, should actually be pronounced Noach (with a gutteral "h") so people who called their boy Noah and don't pronounced it that way are the ones giving their child the name from the opposite gender!

MagalyZz · 27/05/2010 12:59

I am not crazy about it for a boy, but I definitely wouldn't use it for a girl. Although, I think Noa without the h is used in Spain sometimes.

seeker · 27/05/2010 13:03

'Noah, the boy's name, should actually be pronounced Noach (with a gutteral "h") so people who called their boy Noah and don't pronounced it that way are the ones giving their child the name from the opposite gender!"

I'm sure that would have been a great comfort to your daughter throughout her primary school years.

This is a female Noa and I think a lovely song. I have a recording of her singing it with Florent Pagny - brilliant. So having such positive associations with the name, yes I do like it! That's the way it goes generally, tho, isn't it (i.e. I hate the name Simon, but realised to anyone else that just looks irrational!)

FelicityMintcake · 27/05/2010 13:17

Just another similar one to consider - Nuala (think it's pronounced Noo-la) which I think is v pretty.

pinkmagic1 · 27/05/2010 13:19

I actually think it makes a better girls name than a boys. Very pretty, spelt Noa not Noah though.

dizzydixies · 27/05/2010 13:31

I like it , prefer Noa for a girl but use whatever spelling you like

Then again I have a daughter called Dylan and couldn't care less what anyone thinks regards to gender association. She makes it her own - end of.

KERALA1 · 27/05/2010 13:42

I knew a girl in London who named her baby Noa - it led to constant explanations and confusion and the poor child was only 6 months she had a lifetime of that ahead of her, unless of course she moved to a culture where this usually a girl's name. Don't do it.

chaya5738 · 27/05/2010 14:35

Honestly, Seeker, I don't know what sort of neighbourhood or circles you run in but it seems that you are overly-concerned with bullying to the point that you are paranoid about children with perfectly lovely names being harassed. I have seen you make similar comments on other threads. I have a very good friend called Noa, she loves her name and has never been bullied or received otherwise negative treatment because of it. Maybe you should move!?!?

seeker · 27/05/2010 14:44

On this thread, if you notice I am in the majority. It is unkind to give a child a name that 95% of the population of the culture he or she lives in will associate with the opposite gender.

Bumbleconfusus · 27/05/2010 14:44

a work colleague has just named her DD Noa, although I'd never heard it used with a girl before, I really like it.

mathanxiety · 27/05/2010 15:40

There's Noelle?

MagalyZz · 27/05/2010 16:21

Noelle is lovely I think...
