I've been pondering this name and keep coming back to it. What do you think of Euphemia, probably with nickname Effie?

"Euph.." sounds like the beginning of a curse to me. ("You f....") I think you would startle people if you had to shout it out loud anywhere.

immiee · 26/05/2010 16:46

Really don't like it... at all.

minxofmancunia · 26/05/2010 16:59

it sounds like a condition, or a type of delirium

mathanxiety · 27/05/2010 16:05

A condition where you can never say what you really mean, just spit it out like, you have to substitute euphemisms...

leonam · 29/05/2010 11:05

My granny was called Euphemia, but she wasn't keen on it. She was always called Etta for short.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/05/2010 11:09

Sorry dont like it.

You will be constantly having to spell it for people. Get practising spelling it outloud!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 29/05/2010 11:12

Nooo, don't like it one bit. Also I like Effie when I see it written and because I know how it's spelt, but have visions of you shouting it out in softplay or somewhere and other people hearing it as "F-ie" (sorry!).

MamaLazarou · 29/05/2010 11:27

A very silly name.

SillyTillyBilly · 29/05/2010 11:32

Not my taste at all. I don't particularly like the way it sounds like euphemism or 'YOU F...'

But if you like it don't listen to all of us lot...

Sappholit · 29/05/2010 20:05

I love it.

I wish I'd called my daughter Euphemia instead of Bonnie.

But it will always be a 'love it or hate it' name.

skippingturtle · 29/05/2010 22:25

I love Victorian-ish names, but not this one I'm afraid. Prefer Ophelia (unless your surname is Legge, of course).

MoChan · 29/05/2010 22:47

I like it, but I wouldn't do it. I really love Phemy for short, though.

PatriciaHolm · 29/05/2010 23:18

Only if you're happy for your dd for every conversation your/your DD has about her name to go along the lines of..

-"Hello, My name is Euphemia"
-Sorry?

  • "Euphemia"
-"no, sorry, still didn't get it.."
StiffUpperHip · 29/05/2010 23:44

I had an auntie with this name, known as Effie, or Oighrig in Gaelic. She didn't like her name. Have also met a young child recently called Effie only. I like it!

halfawake · 30/05/2010 00:50

I like Effie (or Fifi) but not at all keen on Euphemia. It's a bit of a mouthful and I just don't see the appeal

KillerCleavage · 30/05/2010 01:01

Mrs Doubtfire's first name.

Please don't. I wouldn't have forgiven my DM if she'd called me that no matter how nice Effie sounds.

annasophia · 30/05/2010 13:10

I love it and don't find it a 'mouthful' at all, it rolls of the tongue beautifully .
