Hi All, Can anyone help? I am quite fussy with names and really only like Scottish/Gaelic type names but looking for something a little unusual and not well used.

For boys I quite like Cameron, Lewis, Kerr,
Murray

For girls I really like Ailish (husband not
keen. Also like Shona.

Any suggestions? Thanks

What about Murdo or Sholto? Both fairly unusual boys names of Scottish/Gaelic origin. Not go any girls' names though.

My DS was nearly a Mungo but I changed my mind at the last minute(Angus instead)

LuluF · 25/05/2010 13:43

I like Angus, too - DH REALLY likes it (he never REALLY likes anything) only it's my cat's name. I wish I'd saved it all those years ago

I love Isla for a girl!

hhg · 26/05/2010 13:47

Isla, Heather, Fiona all out as names already in family but I agree, Islan is a lovely name

GrumpyFish · 26/05/2010 14:59

Lachlan?

Catriona? Flora?

I also once met someone with a lovely gaelic girls' name similar to the Irish Mairead, pronounced "My-red", but I don't know how to spell this.

Thediaryofanobody · 26/05/2010 15:36

I love Sholto funnily enough more common in London than the highlands.

LuluF · 26/05/2010 15:43

Haha - that'd be right.

PricklyThistle · 26/05/2010 23:42

Where are you OP? Just asking because in most areas of Scotland Lewis is very popular, so wouldn't go for that if you want something unusual. Cameron's quite popular too I think (I speak as the mum of a Calum!)

Boys:
Moray (better than Murray?), Innes, Logan, Ruraidh

Girls:
Eilidh, Kaetrin, Mirren

dizzydixies · 27/05/2010 07:24

I love Mirren but prefer the Muiranne spelling

hhg · 27/05/2010 08:44

Hi, I'm in Scotland and yes I agree, Lewis, Cameron, Calum, Jack are all names I like but all seem very popular at the moment here

Hedwig3 · 27/05/2010 10:08

Really like Murray.

CalaLilly · 27/05/2010 10:14

I love love love Scottish names! We won't be using anything but when the time comes :-)

I don't think anyone has mentioned my favourite girls name yet- Ailsa
I also like;
Naimh
Cara
Eilean

I think most of my possibilities for boys have been suggested though I also like;
Douglas
Gregor
Alexander (shortened to Sandy)
Coll (as in the Island)

Looking at your original suggestions, they are all gorgeous! I do love Shona- it was my favourite name for years until I started loving Ailsa more. I also love Iona and Isla (my Aunt's dog is called the latter though so that is out for a baby )

PricklyThistle · 28/05/2010 22:00

dizzy my maiden name was Muir, and I struggle with the idea that Muiranne can sound the same as Mirren? It does maybe look more feminine, but it just can't sound the same

dizzydixies · 28/05/2010 22:50

Prickly - I know what you mean but it does - weirdy scottish people that we are

YouCantTeuchThis · 28/05/2010 22:54

Colm for a boy? Eoghan (pronounced yowin)
Roslin for a girl.
