Really liked Talia to begin with and so does my husband, but get a lot of mixed reactions to it.

Really love Sophia now.

Which do you think sounds nicer? What do you think when you hear these names?

Thank you

They're both lovely. Just draw straws and forget what other people think.

aspiegal · 22/05/2010 21:08

They're both great, so I agree basically with chaotica, although personally I prefer Sophia as it sounds softer and I love the meaning 'wisdom', which, after all is a quality a lot of people lack! In this case I think chaotica is being wise- unless you are naming your child somehing like Adolf Hitler, then don't worry about what other people think because you will never please everyone!

halfawake · 22/05/2010 21:45

Both lovely choices.

I think Talia would definitely less popular if that matters to you, but either would be fine IMO.

splashy · 23/05/2010 23:43

thank you for all the comments

appreciate we shouldnt choose a name solely based on other's opinions but do want a name that people react well to.

am keen to hear what kind of people you think of when you hear talia/sophia?

any mum's out there with these names/who used them for their kids?

thanks

I like Sophia though I imagine it to be Sophie often day to day and I do know lots of Sophies.

Talia is also pretty - what does it mean? It sounds possibly short for Natalia but I know it probably isn't!

MagalyZz · 24/05/2010 09:16

I prefer Natalia to Talia. But I would pick Natalia over Sophia but Sophia over Talia.

hth!?

sapell3 · 24/05/2010 09:22

I really like both but slightly prefer Sophia.

LittleDonkin · 24/05/2010 09:51

my sister is due in July and she is naming her little girl Sophia

cas73 · 24/05/2010 09:58

Talia (or Thalia) is the greek muse (a type of goddess) of comedy. Very nice name and I think more unusual than Sophia. I do also like Sophia, but, as Lovethesea said, will probably be Sophie very soon.....

Rubena · 24/05/2010 10:02

Sophie / Sophia

mamatomany · 24/05/2010 11:06

They were both on my list if DS had been a girl, I was leaning towards Talia just because there are a lot of Sophie's around and it's not a million miles away from it.

lovebugs · 24/05/2010 19:08

my baby girl is called Sophia and she is just delicious.
So i vote Sophia!

Tidey · 24/05/2010 19:10

I think they're both lovely. Sorry, not much help, but good luck whichever you choose

LittleMissWorryHead · 24/05/2010 19:44

Sophia.

curlygurly · 24/05/2010 20:14

Talia, know loads of Sophias/Sophies/Sophs!
Tally nn is sweet

alyssa1980 · 24/05/2010 20:30

Talia is really pretty and also really love Tally as a nn.

micku5 · 24/05/2010 20:34

I am biased towards Talia as that is my dd2 name. One meaning is 'dew from heaven'

When she starts school in Sept there will be 2 Sophies and 1 Sophia.

mum2be2010 · 25/05/2010 16:54

Both the names are lovely however I am biased as am planning to name our little girl Sophia when she is born around September so Sophia would be my choice.

However if you want something a little less... dare I say it.... common, then I would go for Talia.

We wanted something not too common but we both love the name Sophia so much that we can't image any other name more perfect now!

Just go with your gut instinct, or wait until the little one's born and decide then depending on which name seems to suit her most?

PeachMelba78 · 26/05/2010 16:11

I love Sophia

GetOrfMoiLand · 26/05/2010 16:15

Sophia is the best. I have a 14 year old dd who is called Sophia so I am biased. It is a beautiful name, I chose it because it soudns so pretty, and I also really like the meaning.

She never gets called Sophie - a couple of people did call her that but I killed corrected them. Sometimes people do pronounce it in an 18th century way (e.g. Soph-EYE-a) but it is a pretty well known name so never causes issues re spelling etc.

She gets called Phia for short, which is pretty also.

I also very much like Thalia, which is a prettier (imo) spelling of Talia. Thalia was one of the three graces in Greek mythology iirc.

clarabella23 · 27/05/2010 20:11

I would go Talia, but spelt Tahlia- don't know why! My little girl is Tyla, so close. I do love Sophia- but not as keen on Sophie-but, if I say it often enough it gives me a vision of a sofa. Sorry.

thesleepyprincess · 27/05/2010 20:45

I have a Sophia and I think it is the most beautiful name in the world. Great for a baby, little girl, teenager or high-powered lawyer!! I've never had anyone calling her Sophie, but a few times we've had 'So-fye-a' which I don't mind as it's very pretty also.

But I like Talia too!

piscesmoon · 27/05/2010 20:59

Sophia

brennannbooth · 27/05/2010 21:01

I prefer Sophia but I do love Talia as well but I would spell that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalia Thalia

ShinyAndNew · 27/05/2010 21:02

I love Thalia. I used to know a Thalia and she was very exotic looking (she was forrin, not sure where from but outside of the EU as she offered me £5k, to marry her brother so he could settle here ) and very smart and funny.
