I like the name itself, however paedophile connotations nix it for me I'm afraid. Can't stand that little girl would have to go through life with that name.

Thoughts?

Ugh!

dizzydixies · 19/05/2010 19:50

her child, not your business I'm afraid

Smilehighclub · 19/05/2010 19:53

calm down Lolita is very pretty. As soon as baby named it will be the

Smithagain · 19/05/2010 19:55

Make sure she knows the connotations. And then let her make her own decision.

Chances are she'll end up being called Lollie or Lottie or something, anyway.

nannynobnobs · 19/05/2010 19:59

Definite unsavoury connotations in today's 'net age... It's used as a keyword for 'barely legal' net porn searches
From a literary viewpoint, Dolores or Lola would substitute...

it's pretty awful isn't it?

and i don't often say that!!! In itself the name is quite pretty, but the connotations are fairly unpleasant

mathanxiety · 19/05/2010 20:11

Yikes

SillyTillyBilly · 19/05/2010 20:17

It is such a pretty name but one of the few names I would say NOOOOOOO. Do they understand the connotations? Do they have any policemen friends who could explain it to them.

It is such a shame. I don't know how you tell them not to use it as they won't thank you for interfering but someone needs to let them know just how bad this name is!

WidowWadman · 19/05/2010 20:22

There are worse, she could call her Wenke

grumpypants · 19/05/2010 20:26

Show her this news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7242623.stm

WingedVictory · 19/05/2010 20:28

Yes, nannynobnobs, I think the "original" (or at least infamous) Lolita was actually a Dolores.

Dolores means sorrows, so not a light-hearted name, either.

All in all, a name too burdened with all sorts of crap to be a good name to give a poor wee girl.

WhatsAllThisThen · 20/05/2010 10:09

Pretty name but sadly inextricably linked with paedophilia! Poor child.

George2010 · 20/05/2010 10:18

It's a great name- would NEVER use it cos of the dodgy link, tricky one, let's hope she goes off it!

wahwahwah · 20/05/2010 10:21

Didn't one of the stores have a little girls bed range called 'Lolita' before they pulled it?

I have met a couple of Jezabels. No, really I have. And a Judas. I do wonder sometimes.

RedRoseRibbon · 20/05/2010 10:32

Sorry but sounds like pornstar..

Poledra · 20/05/2010 10:36

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! pretty name but...... just no.

LadyBone · 20/05/2010 10:39

I think same as Poledra.

upahill · 20/05/2010 10:42

What was that mad name a few years ago that had a court order banning the parents from using it something about Tulla doing the Hula. Think it was in New Zealand.

wahwahwah · 20/05/2010 10:45

Yes, in NZ. Also '4Real'. Also in NZ.

toccatanfudge · 20/05/2010 10:47

grumpy - interesting link - I couldn't help snigger at the name of the name expert Satran........I wonder how many times she had one of the middle letters removed.

swanandduck · 20/05/2010 13:42

There's no way you could separate that name from the paedophile connotations. Surely there must be other names your friend likes as much or almost as much.

Hedwig3 · 20/05/2010 15:56

Oh dear, I hope she soon thinks of something else.

MamaLazarou · 21/05/2010 08:09

Poor kid.

BouncingTurtle · 21/05/2010 08:23

Lolita is a diminutive of Dolores. One of my aunts is called Dolores, but she has always been called Lola or Lolly.

I would certainly not use "Lolita" as I have the book! But in itself I think it is quite a pretty name.

The Lolita of the book is called "Dolly" by her friends and her mother, "Lolita" is how HH referred to her in his head.
