It just looks like a name that's not been spelt properly. And a bit too much like 'meh'.

telsa · 11/05/2010 21:58

It is Chinese or Japanese and means pretty. I think it is rather lovely.

bran · 11/05/2010 22:00

I like it. Isn't the little girl in the film "My Neighbour Totoro" called Mei?

PosyPetrovaPauline · 11/05/2010 22:00

lovely but sadly reminds me of Mei-Ming a little girl in the documentary the dying rooms

lovely name

EnchantedWithGordon · 11/05/2010 22:10

I heard it in that film Bran \

Didn't Mei-Ming mean no name?

BallpointPen · 12/05/2010 10:29

It's quite cute but I think the child would be forever explaining how to pronounce it.

brennannbooth · 12/05/2010 10:33

If, say, I was an employer and was told I was meeting someone called Mei I would expect a Chinese lady to turn up. Nothing wrong with that, obviously, but if you are not of Chinese heritage your daughter will have to constantly correct everyone who will assume it is really "May". And I would imagine she might get bored of that.

islandofsodor · 12/05/2010 10:34

I know a Mai but she is of Chinese heritage

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/05/2010 10:35

Poor child would be constantly spelling it.

herjazz · 12/05/2010 10:37

I don't know yow

treyiw3 · 12/05/2010 12:03

I like May, or Mei/Mai if you have a Chinese connection.

Hedwig3 · 12/05/2010 12:34

I would wonder if it was pronounced 'my' if I saw it written down.

Lovethesea · 12/05/2010 13:04

I would say it 'MY' if I saw it spelt Mei - is that the pronounciation you want?

cluccles · 12/05/2010 16:07

to me it is short for Meilir, a welsh boy's name

thisisyesterday · 12/05/2010 16:10

i don't think Mei is pronounced May though.
think it's more like "my"

I know a Chinese Mei (pn May).

I think it's very pretty but I would assume that a person had Chinese or Japanese heritage from just seeing the name written down.

cloelia · 12/05/2010 19:26

I would pronounce it as a Latin word, May-ee and it's the genitive form of "ego" (I) meaning "of me" so I would think it slightly weird to be honest.

PosyPetrovaPauline · 12/05/2010 21:04

Mei -Ming was pronounced May

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 12/05/2010 22:53

I would have said Meh. Whereas, May is a lovely name and it's really obvious how to spell it. I don't understand why anyone would spell a name differently to the norm. It just looks pretentious to me and causes irritation for the person with the name who has to spell it all the time.

Take it from me with a maiden surname that NOONE could ever spell even though it seems obvious to me.

Just MO of course.

boodleboot · 13/05/2010 07:47

Meh....

mumzy · 15/05/2010 09:08

All the Mei's I know are chinese and this is how its usually spelt when translated from chinese to english. The character means beautiful in both chinese and japanese(though pronounces Mi in Japanese I always thought Mimi to be a nice name for that reason ). I think if you like May, Mei's an nice alternative spelling which most people will pronounce correctly and gives the name an unusual twist.

Tidey · 15/05/2010 09:17

Mai looks nicer. Mei does look like 'meh'.

DuelingFanjo · 15/05/2010 12:00

what about the Welsh name Mai?
