Im expecting dc 1 and we don't know the gender. We have a shortlist for a boy; Sonnie, Freddie, Cassius.

We can't agree on a girls name though, I like flowery names like Daisy, Flora etc but dh came across the name Minnie and I think I like it apart from the minnie mouse thing.

Opinions please

Why are you getting so cross mrsSmurf? So far it's a name floating around in the ether. It's just a word that is yet to be afixed to a person.

You ask for opinions and you are getting them. imo it is a dreadful name to give to a girl, for all the reasons listed below, oh and further associations with a cartoon mouse and a mediocre actress.

BallpointPen · 10/05/2010 18:36

Vagina

mrsSmurf · 10/05/2010 18:41

Slubber-Im not getting cross as you said I asked for opinions and I have thanked everyone who has contributed.

I have stated why those reasons don't put me off.

Never heard the slang term myself.

I think you should call her Marianne - then she can be Minnie for short in the privacy of her own home, and have an absolutely gorgeous grown-up name for when she doesn't want to be known as Minnie (for whatever reason)

mrsSmurf · 10/05/2010 18:45

marianne is lovely I think that will go on my list thanks .

dont want to sound too rude but seriously.... minnie or sonnie??? i can see them being tormented at school already and when chosing a baby name you should remember they are not a baby forever they grow up and these names!?!? not good. x

yummymummie1 · 10/05/2010 18:50

and marianne is much better!!! i'd go with that instead!

Slubberdegullion · 10/05/2010 18:51

okey dokey then

I'm finding it slightly odd that although YOU don't have any problems with the name you seem to be unable to grasp that one day you daughter might.

She is going to be an independent woman one day, you know capable of travel to realms where minnie is another word (albeit a silly word - not sure if that makes it better or worse tbh) for female genitalia.

brockleybelle · 10/05/2010 18:51

What if she grows up to be a big, fat heffalump?

mrsSmurf · 10/05/2010 18:51

Thanks yummy, i didn't think sonnie is that strange for a grown up, thought it would be along the lines of Alfie etc...or not?

We call our girls bits Mini as well.... so do all my mum friends
But my sister calls her girls bits Fifi and then the cartoon was invented.... so you can't win.
If you can get over the reference to bits and pieces, then I LOVE the name.

Slubberdegullion · 10/05/2010 18:52

Marianne much nicer

2old4thislark · 10/05/2010 18:53

Minnie def a name for female genitalia amongst small children around here........I did meet a little girl called Fanny - I kid you not......Apparently she was Swedish and it's a very common name there.

I think as we live in a global village that anyone would be crazy to call a child Minnie nowadays.......

mrsSmurf · 10/05/2010 18:56

slubber- why don't you read the thread before you make assumptions I had already said that if she moved or if Minnie started being used as a nn around here then she could use her middle name.

Brockley-I think the same would apply if she had any type of feminine name. So it is a risk.

Beccas-Yes Fifi is a very common name for it here too.

i hope i wasnt being too harsh .... now alfie is nice i dunno when i hear sonnie i hear sonny and cher and just think its a bit of a daft name? but everyone is different and likes different names have you got any other names for a boy?? x

oceryo · 10/05/2010 18:58

Another vote for Marianne here

CuppaTeaJanice · 10/05/2010 18:59

I think having a longer name on her birth certificate and using Minnie as a nickname will give her the most options through her life.

You could choose any name with an M and an N - Araminta, Melinda, Imogen etc.

I'm in south east England and have heard minnie used for girls bits here. It made me giggle the other day when I heard an advert on TV - 'I play with my mini.....Baby Born'. But I've also heard Tilly used as a word for genitals and lots of little girls have that name.

CuppaTeaJanice · 10/05/2010 19:01

Just seen you like Flora.....what about Florrie?

mrsSmurf · 10/05/2010 19:01

Yummie no not too harsh it's good to get opinions good or bad. I like Freddie but we are leaning more to Cassius with nn Cass. I do like Alfie or Archie but it's got so popular lately.

OP posts:
yummymummie1 · 10/05/2010 19:07

yes alfie and archie have got v popular i like cassius being shortened to cass v nice and prob not v popular which is good! :O X

CuppaTeaJanice · 10/05/2010 19:13

Have you heard the name Linnet - she was a character in the Green Knowe childrens books.

Similar in sound to Minnie, and nature themed too.

Slubberdegullion · 10/05/2010 19:15

I have read the thread.

you said

'I don't really like the idea of naming her something else and the using Minnie as a nn because surely she is just going to be known as Minne then '

well quite

It's a bit of an upheaval for anyone, child or woman to have to change their name at any time. If you want to put your daughter through that because you love the name then go for it. Comes across as a somewhat selfish decision when there are a bazillion other names out there that don't mean vagina though.

mathanxiety · 10/05/2010 19:22

Cassius is lovely. And Marianne. And I love Linnet, also Linnea.

brogan2 · 10/05/2010 19:48

What word do little Welsh girls use then, Mrssmurf?
