Pronunciation and Nick names for Aurelia

As those who have been helping me thru my name-pain on my 'frilly girls name' thread will know, my DH suddenly did a U-turn last week and said he was considering Aurelia (my fave girl's name) but I wasn't to nag and beg him mention it to him about it until he's had a chance to ponder it. Unbelievably, I've managed not to say a word about it but I plan to later today . Hopefully, my hopes won't be dashed!

Anyway, I thought I'd get myself all prepared in case it's a goer.

I've heard/read of at least three pronuncations of the name, it doesn't seem as though there's one correct version, as it appears to be pronounced differently in different countries. I can't decide whether I prefer:

Or-Rell-Ia (rel to rhyme with bell)

Or-Ray-Lia

Thoughts?

Also, I was initially struggling for nick names but depending on the pronunciation, some of these could be ok.

Ray/Raya
Lia

It seems funny to me that the typical Brit pronunciation would be Reel as that doesn't seem like 'natural' way for me to say it at all.

JuliaJeanne - that's interesting to hear ref your friend, as it's a Roman name originally, you'd think the Italians would know what they're doing with it! Also, DH and I love Italy so would feel quite pleased if we've gone for the Italian pronunciation

I would also use the Italian pronunciation. I really really hope you can use this name as I just love it!! Have my fingers crossed for you.

Doing my best evening class Italian in the shower earlier, I decided the pronunciation would be somewhere between Rell and Ray - a bit 'rare' if that makes sense. You do need to actually say it with an Italian accent to have any hope of understanding me on this I think!

I think that makes Rell the most obvious pronunciation for a Brit.

Ow-rel-ee-ah is how I would pronounce it. I vaguely wondered if I start with an 'ow' sound because I'm in Scotland but it could just be me.

my 6 year old is Aurelia, we pronouce it AU REE lia and we don't really shorten it except her older sister sometimes calls her Ree or reely.

Aurelia is the Latin name for the town of Orleans.

I'd say "Or-reel-ia", and would choose nicknames of Ree or Reely", though I have heard of an Aurelia who ended up nicknamed Lily.

i would say it as Or ray lia.

I love it.

I'd call her Ray or lia or i dunno, Button or something.

But i really really like that though.

I've always thought of it as being pronounced Or-Ree-Lee-Ah but now I think about it does feel like a pretty (as in lovely), European name that is more likely pronounced Or-Ray-Lee-Ah - both are very nice sounding IMO

As far as nicknames go the only thought I had was Lia could be turned to Liar by the playground mob but it might not be an issue, after all they will always find something to pick on at the end of the day.

Does Ree-Ree appeal (with that pronounciation)? I had a friend called Lorraine and she was known Ray-Ray as it wasnt a common name for her generation.

Aura might be mistaken for a hippy first name, not saying that is a bad thing just puttin' it out there

Ooooh it was a nice surprise to see my oldish thread had been revived - I'm having a c-sec early next week so will soon know if we will indeed have a little Aurelia (with the Rell pronunciation probably)!

My local chinese take-away shop is called Aurelia & they pronounce it Au-ree-lia.

I know an Aurelia with a French mum who pronounces it Au-rell-ia.

I'm a bit confused as to why it would be prononced Or-reel-ia as there is only one E in it meaning it can't be an ee sound surely??

my Daughter who was born in April is called Aurelia. I had an emergency c section and Pneumonia and I hadn't decided on a name before she was born. We were looking up girls names but with being pretty drugged up and never having time we couldn't get passed the As, although I would always get interrupted on Aurelia so that was it it had to be her name.
I tend to pronounce her name both Auraylia and Aurellia depending how it comes out my mouth at the time. Poor Girl has many Nicknames ie Relish, Rel, Raylie, Smelly Aureli, Reli, Ray, Lia to name but a few. I like the way you can play around with her name a lot. Other members of the family tend to just call her Aurellia.
I am sure you have had your Daughter by now. Hope it went well. Did you stick to Aurelia?

Or ree lia here too. I dont think it really lends itself to being shortened. Great name though. Very Victorian classic.

Is being pronounced the same way as Australia ...starting with AW-... and NOT OR-...
Plus orelia means ear in Portuguese and some people use it so just to make fun of the name.

I like Au-ray-Lia as pronounced in Love Actually. Sounds beautiful.
