I was just wondering (because I'm bored and there's nowt on telly) if anyone here had given their LOs literary-inspired names? My LO-on-the-way is going to have the name of my favourite book-character as a middle name if it's a boy... I was watching Jonathon Ross last night and found out Russell Crowe's DS2 is called Tennyson... can anyone beat that?

feralgirl - please could you advise on pronunciation of Yseult? I was at school with a girl named Iseult (she pronounced her name 'Iz - Elt' but not sure that's the usual way).

Thanks

ohhh I am adding Jem to my list for our yet to be conceived DC3 if it is blue. This fits with my cultural background too albeit spelt slightly differently. I wonder if I can find an Islamic reference to Ophelia and then convince DH.

Turniphead1 · 04/05/2010 12:39

Brtanav - fabulous! I loved that Caitlin character. You need a Rupert to go with.

Atticus is a fabulous name.

bessie26 · 04/05/2010 13:11

I am named after a character in LOTR - thankfully a very minor part as she wasn't included in the film & I would have hated it if my fab & very unique name had become common knowledge and used by all & sundry (which is why I'm not telling you what it is! )

vaunieathome · 04/05/2010 14:13

Don't hate me but I quite like Vesper! Shame about the motorbike reference but its rather lovely! If we had another girl, I wanted a middle name after a Cornish village we used to go on holiday near - St Endellion. So beautiful and Tolkien-esque. However, no 2 was a boy so we went with something fab and really unusual to go with our very common surname!

babymooner · 04/05/2010 14:17

We have an Atticus! Love the book but it's Gregory Peck in the film that does it for me every time

bigbluebump · 04/05/2010 14:29

We're thinking of naming our soon to be born bump Quentin (not necessarily after William Faulkner or Quentin Durward, though ), but because we love the name.

Also like Atticus.

poorbette · 04/05/2010 14:47

My DD has Eliza as a middle name, as a cockney girl no longer living in London, I named her after the most famous cockney of them all!

annasophia · 04/05/2010 15:05

We have a Quentin. Most people assume he's named after the Famous Five or Quentin Tarantino, neither of which is the case .

CheerfulYank · 04/05/2010 15:57

My middle name is Christine.

After the homicidal car. Because my mother was reading it the night before she had me, and she thought it sounded pretty after Megan.

Homicidal car.

CheerfulYank · 04/05/2010 15:58

If you really wanted to go with an Alice reference you could even go with Lewis or Charles/Charlie after the author, if you're not bothered by those persistant rumors of paedophilia...

LittleWhiteWolf · 04/05/2010 16:29

bessie26 Its not Goldberry is it?

raphaelsmama · 04/05/2010 19:57

I quite like the name Vivianne for DC2 if a girl, from the Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood,my fave.

MudandRoses · 04/05/2010 20:41

I have a Jem (from To Kill a Mockingbird)

thecatatemygymsuit · 04/05/2010 20:55

DD's middle name is Harper. Couldn't resist .

MudandRoses · 04/05/2010 20:57

Next one is a boy - would it be too much to call him Atticus, [wonders]?

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 04/05/2010 21:24

cheerful I don't believe the paedo stuff for a moment. Why a man who likes the company of children must be a paedo as opposed to just a shy bloke who liked to entertain children with fabulous stories is beyond me. My husband loves being with kids because he's basically just a big kid himself, and he's great with them. He's the best daddy, and parents love him coz he usually entertains the kids while they sit and drink wine! It's really sad, don't you think?

However, thank you very much for the suggestion

I asked a friend for ideas and she came up with "Pooh". (who needs enemies!!!)

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 04/05/2010 22:28

My DD is named after a book character, and my DS after a song

I'll out myself if I name them though

Adair · 05/05/2010 08:39

Ooh, ooh Calvin. After Calvin and Hobbes. Not really literary but like a lot...

Ffrecklefface · 05/05/2010 09:19

I would have called DD Atticus if she'd been a boy. If DC2 ever comes and is male, then it will be on the list.

I wanted to call DD Dorothea, after Dorothea Brooke from Middlemarch, but Bloke wouldn't have it.

Turniphead1 · 05/05/2010 10:53

My 3rd child has a literary nickname - Boud - after the nickname used amongst the Mitford sisters. I was having a Mitford season just after she was born and it just kind of stuck.

Bluesunday · 05/05/2010 14:08

Could Harper be a boy's name d'ya think? I really like it, 99.9% certain this LO is a DS tho! Gonna put it on my shortlist anyway

OP posts:
Ffrecklefface · 05/05/2010 16:34

If I remember GCSE lit clearly, Harper was a name chosen as a male pseudonym by the female author.

So you could totally use it for a boy.

lottiejenkins · 05/05/2010 18:08

My ds was named Wilfred after Wilfred Owen, i didnt realise till afterwards about "Wilfred of Ivanhoe" When he was a baby we had a very eccentric retired school teacher in our village who used to peer in the pram and say "how is young Ivanhoe then??"

mummyloveslucy · 05/05/2010 19:31

My step sister is calling her baby boy Litton. I can't say I'm too keen personally, but then, I do prefere more boring traditional names.
