Literary baby names?

I was just wondering (because I'm bored and there's nowt on telly) if anyone here had given their LOs literary-inspired names? My LO-on-the-way is going to have the name of my favourite book-character as a middle name if it's a boy... I was watching Jonathon Ross last night and found out Russell Crowe's DS2 is called Tennyson... can anyone beat that?

carrots what about 'James' as in Captain James (Jas) Hook?

I'm a Tess after T Hardy's novel - not the best heroine to be named for perhaps!?

I have a 'Wolf', but strongly wanted 'jude' - vetoed by DH. Do love Wolf now though & he loves it too. Love 'Aphra' for a girl & 'Laurie' for a boy. Also desperately wanted a Ptolemy but that got vetoed too.

Bluesunday · 02/05/2010 21:32

Ooh, love Harper!

I wanted to call DD Eustachia (Return of the Native), but DH wasn't having it. Bah.

Bluesunday · 02/05/2010 21:36

It seems like a lot of DPs/DHs get the final say on the choice of names..? It seems a shame, there would be lot more interestingly monikered DCs walking about...

We toyed with Tess for dd1 too - but again, it didn't go with dp's surname.

BlueSunday - dp didn't get the final say; we just kept arguing until we found compromises that we could both live with!

dizzydixies · 02/05/2010 21:38

BlueSunday - I'm rather pleased as some of the names I was coming out with during all my pregnancies aren't something I would choose now

PartialToACupOfMilo · 02/05/2010 21:42

My Tess was named after my all time favourite novel. I was a bit nervous that people would comment about it being a bit of a pessimistic name, but no one has - maybe they just haven't read the book

Glad someone mentioned Tristan. I always loved Yseult and was sure my first DD would be one, but DH quickly vetoed that...

Actually I have a (kind of) literary name myself. Well, I'm named after an historical figure but my mother was reading her biography when pregnant with me - does that count?

Bluesunday · 02/05/2010 21:43

I would have been Tallulah if my Dad hadn't put his foot down and insisted I have a "normal" (ie BORING) name - but he wasn't there in the delivery room for my birth, unlike my youngest sister where he was so shocked at the gore and blood he let my mum call the baby whatever she wanted (Crystal - it was pretty unheard of then). I am planning on not saying anything about the names I want until 5 seconds after I deliver this one - how can DP refuse me then?

I quite like Quentin - hero of the 1823 historical novel, "Quentin Durward" by Sir Walter Scott.

shedragon · 02/05/2010 22:06

Named DD2 Portia, as in The Merchant of Venice. DH's choice, i had vetoed it all thru pregnancy. During delivery when I mentioned the name, there was a polite pause and a 'you did the hard work, you can choose' comment. Seemed they didn't agree with his choice!! Was so knackered and hormonal after that Portia she is. And I love the name. And it suits her.

Only down-side was we got cards with 'delighted to hear of Porsche's arrival'. Oh dear

BakewellTarts · 02/05/2010 22:06

DHs best friend growing up had the middle name of Byron...not an easy one to live with.

Cadelaide · 02/05/2010 22:49

DD has a poncetastic Shakespearian name much mocked here on MN.

I have no regrets.

Quattrocento · 03/05/2010 00:26

I did rather want any of the following for girls

Cordelia
Imogen
Hero

Or for a boy

Sebastian
Orlando

DH however is from Yorkshire. He informs me that In Yorkshire People Like Solid Names. Like Kings or Queens of England.

I was in serious danger of getting an Elizabeth or a Victoria or a George (nothing against those names but they weren't for me), but adopted a cunning plan of seeming to go along with his theme (Kings and Queens) in order to force a compromise, and professed to adore the names Ethelred and Canute.

HarrietTheSpy · 03/05/2010 00:42

Harriet is a very respectable choice of name.

Quattrocento · 03/05/2010 00:43

From ...?

HarrietTheSpy · 03/05/2010 00:46

The book, Harriet the Spy.

I am named after a character from a Henry James novel that my dad was studying at uni shortly before I was born.

I wanted my DC's to be named after Anne's children in the Anne of Green Gables series. I got my Jem, but was vetoed by DH on either of my DD's being Diana or Marilla.I really wish I had stuck to my guns on DD2, as DH is not living with us any more and spends no time with her at all .But that's a whole other story!

dizzydixies · 03/05/2010 08:16

Quattro, dd3 is Cordelia & Imogen is on shortlist if Dc4 is another DD. Loving your cunning plan though!!

EveWasFramed · 03/05/2010 09:45

I wanted literary names, DH want sort of OBVIOUS lit. names, but, fortunately, DCs names happened to be names we both liked that fit the literary thing, as well!

So we've got DS: Duncan (from MacBeth)

DD: Regan (from King Lear...though she's a horrible character, so we actually spell it Reagan)

I loved Scout, too, but I named our cat that pre-children, so didn't think DD would like to share her name with our pet!

Quattrocento · 03/05/2010 10:01

Do you ever wonder about the fate of the literary hero or heroine though?

I love the name Duncan although it has a wider connotation than just from Macbeth. Take Ophelia. Lovely name, but can't help picturing her drowned and covered in weeds...

I'd definitely prefer characters with happy associations.

rowingcah · 03/05/2010 11:01

My DS's middle name is Atticus. My mother hated it initially and then I got her to read to Kill a Mocking Bird and she loves it now! DH wanted it as DS's first name but I thought it might be a prone to teasing at school! I have an unusual name and know the hell it can bring!

mopsyflopsy · 03/05/2010 11:11

Atticus is a great name. What is teaseworth about it ?

EveWasFramed · 03/05/2010 11:31

Yes, Quattro...Duncan does have a wider connotation, and so does Reagan, which is why they both kind of fit our 'criteria' about names...I liked that they were literary, but not SO obvious, and the first thing people think when they hear either of them is the 'fates' both those characters actually suffered...

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 03/05/2010 11:42

missi I'd never thought of that! IE the link, not the name. Unfortunately we've already decided against James as we have a nephew with that name my BF's son is James. It's such a gorgeous name though that it if wasn't for them it would be perfect.

I'm loving Sebastian (ironically same BF's hub's name!) but where's it from in literature? .

quattro we're in Yorkshire and I can assure you it's not actually stopping people from naming their kids totally outlandish stuff. Some good, some bad, but it's not just Georges and Henrys.

rowingcah · 03/05/2010 11:43

mopsyflopsy - Fatticus came to mind!
