We might be crazy but...

... our baby is due in September and, goodness knows why, my OH started calling the bump Gulliver. Trouble is, I'm doing it too and last night we both admitted that it was starting to sound like an option if it's a boy! Are we mad? What are your thoughts on Gulliver?!

Skegness · 27/04/2010 09:30

Sweet name for a bump but, imo, slightly less so for a real live person!

bobbiewickham · 27/04/2010 09:32

Great name.

Why the hell not?

Gully sweet as a nickname too.

bobbiewickham · 27/04/2010 09:33

God, the more I think about it the more I like it.

Works for a computer nerd type, a tree surgeon type, and a dynamic thrusting type.

Cool and sexy and interesting.

Due a revival, I think.

Beingblonde · 27/04/2010 09:34

I agree that Gully is cool! Sexy and interesting? Well now, that certainly sounds like any son of mine...

bobbiewickham · 27/04/2010 09:36

Well, you have to think ahead...I'm thinking cute at first, though, obviously...

Beingblonde · 27/04/2010 09:37

I totally love it now

OP posts:
BessieBoots · 27/04/2010 09:38

Noooooo. Sounds like you're trying too hard to be out there.

(Sorry. Just my opinion. If you like it, go for it!)

bobbiewickham · 27/04/2010 09:42

It's not "out there" - it's a proper name, probably quite common a couple of generations back.

Not that far from Oliver, really.

Do it, do it, do it!

Beingblonde · 27/04/2010 09:54

I love Oliver, but there's a reason we can't use it. I am flipping between totally loving it, and imagining everyone else's reactions!

allstarsprincess · 27/04/2010 10:06

I think it is a really cool name. We are due in July and our DD keeps calling the baby/bump Tiger. I think it seems to be sticking too!

bobbiewickham · 27/04/2010 10:06

Sod everybody's reactions...if you called him John you'd get people saying "how boring". People will always have an opinion, and you can't let it bother you.

It's a very cool name indeed. Wish I'd thought of it!

bobbiewickham · 27/04/2010 10:08

I like Tiger too, if that's any help, but as a permanent nickname, if you see what I mean. There's one at school with my dses, and although it's not his birth cert name, it's what everyone calls him, and always have. But I think a name like Tiger needs a 'real' name to fall back on.

allstarsprincess · 27/04/2010 10:13

Yeah, we were not sure what 'real' name goes with Tiger as a nickname though. Gulliver would work ;)

Seriously, I think it goes to show that any name will work as the child will grow into it.

Go with Gulliver, if you don't I might....

bobbiewickham · 27/04/2010 10:16

The lad at my boys' school has just got a normal name, like James or something.

They just started calling him Tiger as a baby, and it stuck.

CakeandRoses · 27/04/2010 10:30

It is fabulous!! What a find!I don't think it sounds too out-there or try-hard, just nicely different.

Go for it! Please! I reckon you'll regret it if you don't.

Oh and I wouldn't share it with family and friends until after your DS is safely born and named. They might give you a few if you tell them now but I'm sure they'll love it once they're presented with a real-life cutie called Gulliver/Gullie.

twosofar · 27/04/2010 10:33

Love it! May nick for DS3 if I ever have one!

KnottyLocks · 27/04/2010 10:43

I like it. Great middle name if you are worrying about it as a first name. However, I think you should go for it: Gully is a fabulous nickname.

Psammead · 27/04/2010 10:54

I do love a thread which starts off 'we might be crazy...'

but this this instance - go for it! It's not often people hit on a nice, underused, classic-but-interesting name, especially for a boy.

I love it - my first reaction was a bit but 3 mins later and I think it's great.

That's probably the reaction you'll get in rl too - so be prepared for some faces - but I think it's one of those names people will swing around to.

Congrats!

MiniMarmite · 27/04/2010 11:17

I'm normally one for very conventional names and even I'm liking it

Beingblonde · 27/04/2010 11:22

Hmm... I've just looked it up and apparently it's a French name (although it doesn't sound French to me!) and means 'glutton'.

OP posts:
diddl · 27/04/2010 11:34

Sounds like a surname to me.

Rather have Lemuel tbh.

PinkoLiberal · 27/04/2010 11:38

Like it- good call

Unusual but cool IMO

We have an unusual but still not amde up name for ds2 (Stirling) nd at first got laods of negatives but he likes it and people seem to accept it now. Plus he likes F1 which helps LOL

Magaly · 27/04/2010 11:53

I must be crazy too. I like it. I also like Gideon.

Is it french for glutton? Well, Gordon is spanish for fatbloke. accent on the last o.

Antidote · 27/04/2010 12:41

That's a lovely name!

We started calling the (not yet quite a) bump: Eggbert/Eggberta.

Which we never, ever, ever thought anyone would take seriously.

How wrong were we?

FoxyRevenger · 27/04/2010 13:05

We have the same problem with Archipelago......
