The cliches abounding in this topic

I enjoy the Baby names section - I'm interested in names generally, and, furthermore, am expecting a DC2 so the choosing of names has some direct relevance to my life at the moment. However - I am wearing of some of the following:

  1. People who claim to have overheard particular names called out in the supermarket (always derogatory in tone, as well);
  1. People who say, in an uppity manner - well, it's ok for a BABY but it won't do for a lawyer/brain surgeon (my DP is a barrister and as any fule kno, as far as the legal profession is concerned, they have practioners with ALL sorts of names);
  1. People who talk about names being common, 'chavvy' or 'council house'. I think this says FAR more about the people decrying the name than those contemplating using it ;

I could go on, but that's enough for starters. I'm not against robust discussion either, just a bit bored of the same old nonsense being trotted out...

Arse, so you're fucking around with somebody just because you can and because it's fun... I don't need a "world view" to interpret that. It speaks for itself.

I hope you are ok lockets, and have not let this loser get to you. For what its worth, I think Saskia is a lovely name.

DS's second name isn't well received on here. It is Callum. It was DH's choice, and not one I would have made (and wish we hadn't), but I don't think it is worthy of the criticism it gets on here and elsewhere sometimes.

It is an old name with history, but it still gets labelled as chavvy sometimes. I suppose it is is an example of a nice enough name becoming tarnished as a result of becoming too popular too quickly.

He has a lovely first name, which seems to be generally be liked in RL and on MN

Gosh, only just come back to this thread. What a turn it's taken Hope you aren't too ruffled by it, Lockets - obviously the person doing it just looks like a tragic loon.

The name Zoe being linked (ok, only by a v. small minority on MN) to the "c" word - are you serious!!!! It's an old saints name thats been used for thousands of years (Greek) and mentioned in the New Testament in relation to eternal life. It was also borne by a ruling Byzantine empress of the 11th century - can you get much more classic?!!! For goodness sake, what are things coming to!

Somehow I don't see the daugthers of either Lenny Kravitz or Darcey Bussell (or that bright young thing on the Junior Apprentice for that matter) shedding their cool/classy clothes for a pink tracksuit and coin rings anytime soon...

Even though it's an ancient name, I've always seen Zoe as a cool, rocker chick name really, a bit arty etc.

So what other classics will receive the same harsh judgement next? Lucy, Emily, Amy, Rachel, Charlotte? Maybe only the Constances, Prudences and Cordelias of this world are safe (well, for the moment anyway...)

Sorry just realised this is an old thread - oops, but will post anyway...

I don't get the obsession with names ruining job prospects either. Surely it is better to stand out from the crowd in a sea of CVs.

Also the thing about 'well that's a surname so I don't like it'...

Thomas
Edward
Richard

...all surnames of people I know!

estya · 27/05/2010 12:10

Ok - getting back on subject. What you call you child says everything about you and only a bit about your child. I think when people say 'could a Chardonnay become a barrister' we can't really believe that she won't get to uni/a good law firm etc because of her name. I think we mean 'am I the sort of mother who could produce a barrister'
'And when I'm in the supermarket and I'm talking to my child - will strangers think I'm the kind of mother who couldn't bring up a barrister'

And I don't like surnames as first names. But then I also don't know how anyone could eat tomato ketchup. The stuff is disgusting. But people do so I have to accept that people like different things to me!
