It's a bit much, though it is nice. Maybe Anwen instead?

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 01/01/2015 13:57

it's my second option for my womb-inhabitant!

I'd go for it.

Hello,

I just wanted to say that Arianwen is a gorgeous name and is one of two that we are considering for any daughters that we have (the other is Ceridwen).

I can say from personal experience (my name is Angharad) that having a Welsh name is the best thing ever. Yes some people can't pronounce it but that just gives you hilarious stories to tell. Everywhere I go people comment on my name and how much they like it. Your daughter will thank you one day for such a beautiful name!

SunnyBaudelaire · 02/01/2015 11:48

be OK in Wales but English people would 'shwa' the vowels so it would become
Ari'nw'n
which might really annoy you.
It is a lovely name though I suppose it means 'silver white'?

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 04/01/2015 12:30

I find that correcting people to actually pronounce both the As in my younger son's name works after only one or two corrections. Nothing on earth will enduce the school staff to pronounce my elder child's name right, they "can't" pronounce a rolled R (yet manage it when they are being pirates - he's in reception - or the teachers of older kids when they are teaching french.

depends on how much you want the R pronounced in "Arianwen" really

squoosh · 04/01/2015 14:06

It's quite a clumsy looking name. Not a fan at all.

SunnyBaudelaire · 05/01/2015 08:43

also , doesn't Arian mean 'money'? so Money white?

nightandthelight · 05/01/2015 09:04

Only because the Welsh chose the word silver to mean money.

SunnyBaudelaire · 05/01/2015 09:08

well yes but as it is plastered over every cashpoint in Wales, I think the first association would now be cash.

nightandthelight · 05/01/2015 09:12

Fair enough, I have never associated it with that despite living in Wales but I can see that some people might. I just think that it is a beautiful name :)

it is very pretty but honestly the majority of English people will never be able to say it properly.

Arianne or Arianna are both lovely,
Did you know that 'Bronwen' means 'white breast'?

I am a little unsure as to how Arianne or Arianna are easier to pronounce than Arianwen. Surely wen does not pose a problem for non-Welsh speakers?

SunnyBaudelaire · 05/01/2015 09:41

lol but English people would say 'w'n not wen.
Honestly I have seen this problem so many times with my sister's name for example which is a well known Irish name.
The deliberate mispronuncation, the little smirk.

nightandthelight · 05/01/2015 09:47

I find that really quite sad that people deliberately mispronounce. Arianne is also a beautiful name but luckily I live in Wales so will be sticking with Arianwen for any daughters that I have :)

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 05/01/2015 09:54

Deliberately mispronounce? Says who?

nightandthelight · 05/01/2015 10:01

That seems to be what sunny is saying about her sister. I haven't experienced it myself, plenty of people do struggle with my name but most do seem to give it a good go. Perhaps it is worse with Irish names as some people do still make lots of jokes about the Irish unfortunately.

Guadalupe · 05/01/2015 10:07

It was quite odd reading this thread and thinking about my reply, then reading my own reply from three years ago. Grin

Guadalupe · 05/01/2015 10:10

Four years actually. I wonder if OP has a four year old Arianwen?

nightandthelight · 05/01/2015 10:10

Lol hadn't noticed that! Would be good to know what the name ended up being :)

Guadalupe · 05/01/2015 10:12

I didnt notice until I saw myself. It was quite disconcerting for a minute!

ThePartyArtist · 02/12/2015 18:46

Did you call her Arianwen in the end?
