I think it is so pretty but I'm not sure if it is too unusual and would maybe cause pronunciation problems/ teasing.

What do you think?

Sorry, makes me think of a type of melon. How is it pronounced?

annh · 05/04/2010 21:40

Sorry, don't like it. Makes me think of callipers for some reason. Also, isn't calliope another name for a steam organ?

Kingsroadie · 05/04/2010 21:41

Reall like it, but then my daughter is called a classical greek name too wih pronuciation problems (I just correct strangers and all our friends know how to pronounce it anyway) so perhaps I am not the person to ask!

I like it. The pronounciation seems fairly intuitive.

sleepyhead3 · 05/04/2010 22:43

I think it is pronounced:

Call- ee- oh- pee.

Are you thinking of a 'cantaloupe' melon 5inthebed?

popsycal · 05/04/2010 22:45

cal-eye-oh-pee

DinahRod · 05/04/2010 22:47

Only ever heard it pn the way sleepyhead put it.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 05/04/2010 22:47

Did you get the name from the novel- Middlesex? I didn't like the book but don't mind the name.

seaturtle · 05/04/2010 22:51

I think it's pretty.

Nemain · 05/04/2010 22:52

I also onlyknow it as a character from Greys Anatomy and pronounced how popsycal has said.

That character is Latio as well no?

I like it, but think that it is a particular name ifygwim.

LadyCressida · 05/04/2010 22:54

I thought it was pronounced like popsycal says (but then i've been watching Grey's Anatomy too so perhaps that is an american pronounciation?!)

However said like that it's similiar rhythm to Hermione or Penelope which would fit with the classical greek...

It's a cool name though!

onebatmother · 05/04/2010 22:56

Callipers

  • mispronuciation problems = no for me.

There are lots of other sim Greek names though. Calypso, for eg, I love.

Linnet · 05/04/2010 23:03

I love it, I'll admit I wanted to name dd1 this although at the time I wasn't sure how to pronounce it, now I know and I still love it but dd1 ended up with a different name.

I considered it for dd2 but she ended up with a different greek name.

Sidge · 05/04/2010 23:20

I prefer Cassiopeia. Similar pronunciation problems though!

plonker · 05/04/2010 23:22

I thought of callipers too, sorry

terrible name.

lemonadesparkle · 06/04/2010 09:55

Its the name of the Royal Naval Reserves unit in Newcastle Upon Tyne Gateshead (obviously preceded by an HMS). Holds lovely memories for me as we held a party there to celebrate our wedding, but its not a name I would personally choose.

BeautifullyScreaming · 06/04/2010 09:57

Another callipers here I'm afraid.

I think it could possibly grow on me though.

Fennel · 06/04/2010 10:00

I was very tempted to call dd3 Calliope, I love classical Greek names. I didn't in the end, for the reasons people say here, but it is a lovely name.

dizzydixies · 06/04/2010 12:11

someone once told me it was greek for toilet - never looked into whether or not it was true though

pixiestix · 06/04/2010 13:56

Callipers for me aswell, sorry.
