Have 3 boys, this will be my first and only daughter - think this is why it seems so hard to choose the right name.

Names have included:

Eleanor
Lydia
Sophia
Eloise
Alexia/Alexis
Sienna
Verity
Bryony

Latest was Sophia but I have caught wind of this becoming popular and most Sophias getting called Sophie anyway which is a totally different name IMO and I'm not as keen.

Didn't want anything really popular.

Can't have Rose as it bleeds into our surname, as does Eloise actually as a first name.

Surname is 2 syllables beginning with S very similar to Simpson.

So, actually, you love Rose and that's what you really want to use. It's beautiful.

You have to get the Rose issue out of the way I'm afraid! I had a name I really, really wanted to use for DD but that it was impossible for us to use, it wasn't until I was able to 'let go' of it that I was able to choose her name. I tied myself in knots about it, ruled out loads of names that were, in fact, serious contenders and ending up having to go right back to the beginning...

Anyway, all is not lost. I see what you mean about Rose bleeding into your surname, it's a shame about that, but surely not insurmountable? Could you live with naming her Rosa (or one of the many, many other variants) and calling her Rose a lot of the time/within the family?

(I love Rosalie)

DinahRod · 05/04/2010 21:46

Some names on your list are popular but that is because they are beautiful. Choose a name you love.

Eleanor - lovely. Gorgeous nn as well, Ellie ubiquitous but adore Nell or Nora
Lydia - lovely, have never come across the rhyme with chlamydia. Another name that is very attractive is Lorna.
Sophia - lovely - the only Sophia I know is called Sophia and definitely not Sophie
Eloise - pretty
Alexia/Alexis - not for me, too Dynasty, prefer Alix or Alexandra
Sienna - pretty but don't like the celeb connotation
Verity - too harsh for me but classic and classy
Bryony - no

choosyfloosy · 05/04/2010 21:51

Call her Rose Red S_.

Red is a v cool middle name IMO (I am not cool though). Rose Red is a fab name - I really like double names, love that bit in Pretty Woman where the shopwalker says 'Mary Pat, Mary Sue, Mary Ellen' or whatever it is).

NorkilyChallenged · 05/04/2010 22:01

Rosalie is good actually.

Lexi is very popular and that is an obvious shortening for Alexia so I think that might put me off (if you really don't want something too popular).

Charlotte definitely popular. Sophia is lovely, but Sophie less so (and very popular here too). Eleanor/Ellie/etc all hugely hugely popular and I wouldn't go for that at all.

I like Verity too. And Violet.

But really I agree with Driven that you need to deal with the Rose issue first, as it's sitting there behind everything else just now.

VerityBrulee · 05/04/2010 22:04

What about Rosa?

morejuiceplease · 05/04/2010 22:06

My dd is Lydia. It's not too popular and such a lovely name obviously picked by people with impeccable taste!

lowrib · 05/04/2010 23:42

How about these Rose names?

Rosana / Rosanna
Rosalina
Rosemary
Rosanne

What's your background? There are so many variants of Rose, could you pick one you have ties to maybe? Have a look at this page for a long list of them, e.g....

Róisín (Irish)
Roza (Russian)
Rosella (Italian)
Ruzenka (Czech)
Chara (Spanish, and English apparently, meaning Rose)

etc

lowrib · 05/04/2010 23:44

"If she marries she'll only have this combo for a few years anyway. Then she'll have pot luck with her husband's surname!"

PollyTechnique how young are you planning on marrying your DDs off?!! She'd have the name for 16 years at the very least. And one would hope, for a little longer too!

outnumbered2to1 · 05/04/2010 23:47

my vote goes to Eloise as i have a niece with this name and she is gorgeous (also is a variation of my name!!!)

others would be
Amelia
Heather
Rose
Freya

mckenzie · 05/04/2010 23:56

personally I'd wait until she is born. We'd decided on names for our second DC, boys and girls names, but when DC was born she so didn't suit the girl's name we had chosen and as I looked at her another name came into my head and refused to go away. And so she was given the new name and I still think it suits her so much better than the other one.

My nan in law is Rose with a surname that sounds like it could be very similar to yours. FWIW, I think it sounds lovely together.

Quattrocento · 05/04/2010 23:58

I've been thinking about a sensible way of resolving this sort of angst.

Perhaps you could have a baby-name lottery.

The idea is that you charge everyone you know a pretty nominal sum. Say £5 for argument's sake. Proceeds to charity. You draw up a shortlist of names, and your friends/family get to choose a name. Or two.

Then on the day of the birth, you get the midwife to draw the name out of a hat.

Problem solved.

My first name is Catherine (as in Wuthering Heights), which can be shortened to lots of lovely nicknames.(shame I am always called my staid boring middle name!)
I am mad for 'Gone with the wind' and love Scarlett, India and Melanie. I wanted Catey Scarlett for my dd, but dh wanted Victoria [vomiting in a bucket emoticon] so she is Catey Victoria instead.
If you like Rose, but are worried about it merging with your surname, what about Rosamund (means rose of the world)?
(And p.s. sorry to be anal, but the other GWTW poster was wrong, Scarletts mother was called Ellen Robillard. sorry. x)

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 06/04/2010 04:05

Rosalind
Rosamund

Naming a daughter on the basis that she'll only have the combination for a few years is...extremely unwise, I would say, if I were being kind.

sophieandbelly · 06/04/2010 08:03

love lots of ur names

lydia
elouise
sophia is nice i no a couple and dont get shortend to sophie, altho they do to soph as do i and i hate that!!

LiquoriceLila · 06/04/2010 08:56

Don't go with Lydia, I know one and she hates it as she gets Clamydia. Plus some of the other names on your list are much nicer, I like Sophia best.

Wanderingsheep · 06/04/2010 09:11

Oh I love Sophia!

What about Ella? Similar to Eleanor and Eloise.

KAEKAE · 06/04/2010 09:18

I found it really difficuly choosing a name for my DD.. When I had my son I had pages and pages of girls names I liked and then when she came along couldn't think of a name that I loved. Anyway,

Eleanor - really like. Classic.
Lydia - OK
Sophia Boring
Eloise - chavvy
Alexia/Alexis ok
Sienna chavvy
Verity really like
Bryony - not girly enough for me.

What about

Lara
Ava
Katherine
Louise
Amber
Elizabeth
Emily
Lucy

DrivenToDistraction · 06/04/2010 09:31

You know, on reflection, I think Rose doesn't run into your surname to badly at all...

LadyOfTheFlowers · 06/04/2010 09:48

I have had a re-think and don't think it's that bad, but maybe I am trying to talk myself into it?

OP posts:
DrivenToDistraction · 06/04/2010 10:57

Well, there's nothing wrong with looking at the options for using the one name you truly love

TBH, I think Rose Simpson works a lot better than Rosa Simpson, the 'a' sound makes it sound a bit like an instruction IYSWIM. Obviously rose isn't a verb, but I still get 'rose a simpson'.

You do kind of get a sort of Ro' Simpson thing going on with Rose, but only if you don't annunciate the words properly.

bellissima · 06/04/2010 14:21

Well I like Lydia but if you are convinced she will get nicknames then maybe Celia or Clara. Or Julia. All in the same vein.

I also like Sophia provided its Sof-eye-a. And Eleanor.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 10/04/2010 08:23

DH threw a spanner into the works last night- a name I love but never bothered to suggest as I thought he would laugh me out of town!

He wants to call her 'Penelope Violet' - straight out of the blue, just like that.

He has not been thinking about it at all though.....

What do we think about that?
That's not majorly popular (yet) is it?

OP posts:
ChippyMinton · 10/04/2010 08:27

Quick, say yes!!
Both pretty. I only know one litttle girl called Penelope, so you may be onto a winner.

Caro1302 · 10/04/2010 20:14

I have a Lydia and get loads of compliments on the name. I love Eleanor too.
