Mia, Mya or Maya

Hi
My friend is due next month and having a girl and loves these very similar names (so do i) but cant decide which one to use.

All 3 go with surname and middle name would be Louise(her middle name) or Anne (family name on both sides).

Dont want to make out anyone is stupid but she would have the Mia...said as Meeya not just a different spelling of Mya
IYKWIM

Thanks
xx

i really like maya.

KittyTwoShoes · 04/04/2010 16:10

I love Maya, but am biased!

TinaSparkles · 04/04/2010 16:17

Mia... am also biased!

Not sure if it goes with Anne though, could sound like a mouthful.

QOD · 04/04/2010 16:20

My Norwegian cousin is Maya but pronounced
My-ah
S'lovely

TrillianAstra · 04/04/2010 16:28

Depends if you want to say 'me' 'my' or 'may'.

I don't think any of them go with Anna - the vowels would be too difficult.

I like Maya.

skihorse · 04/04/2010 16:38

I've never heard Maya pronounced May-ah.

TrillianAstra · 04/04/2010 16:43

I assumed the choice of 3 included 3 different pronunciations, maybe I'm wrong?

FloweryTwats · 04/04/2010 16:45

I know of a Maia pn'd 'May-ah' but I like it pn'd 'My-ah', always trip over it.

AnnieLobeseder · 04/04/2010 16:52

DD1 is Maya, which I've assumed no-one could get wrong. But she's regularly called Mia, or people pronounce her name May-ah, like mayor, not My-ah. Drives me slightly mad! But they're all lovely names.

Was pondering spelling it Maia, but figured people would be more likely to get it right if it were spelled Maya. Guess I was wrong!

Also considered Maih, which is a transliteration of the Hebrew (DH is Israeli), but thought that would be too odd.

AnnieLobeseder · 04/04/2010 16:53

Anna would probably work as middle name.... our surname starts with A and we don't have too much trouble saying Maya A....

Magaly · 04/04/2010 17:01

Maya pronounced My-Ah

Or Maia pronounced the same way.

Magaly · 04/04/2010 17:02

HOW about Amaya? you could say the A is taken from Anne. A nod to Anne, links it in.

Nobody would pronounce Amaya like amee-ya either. It's Spanish.

Greenshadow · 04/04/2010 17:08

I think if someone chooses any of these names they will have to accept that there will be different pronounciations.

Sorry AnnieL, but if I saw Maya written down, I would assume it was pronounced May-ah. That is how the English would pronounce that combination of letters.

Sparkle - I've never seen the name Mya before. If I see the name Mia, I am very hesitant to pronounce it as I know of people who say it both ways (Me-ah and My-ah).

Oh geeezus this is getting complicated lol.

Her surname is quite long and begins with a B so wants 1st name soft sounding. Does Louise go with any of these? I think they do.

I think she would pronounce the names this way as she says them.

Mia...me-ya
Mya...my-ya
Maya..may-ya

Id not thought of Maya being said as my-ya before.

The other names/spellings are also ones shes not talked about...
Amaya is lovely Magaly.
Maia is also unusual spelling but another option also.

Definitely Maya (pn my-ah)! My DD1 is Maia (pn this way).

Mia is okay.

I think Mya is a made up spelling so I don't like it I'm afraid.
I also don't like the pn May-ah as I think this is a recent invention too. If you have a look at the origins of the name Maya, it is from the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit and is pn My-ah.
Good luck to your friend!

pointydog · 04/04/2010 19:57

I really like Mia (Mee-a). A much nicer sound than My-a.

I know a Mia and it has really grown on me

pointydog · 04/04/2010 19:58

Mia Louise is nice

foxyD · 04/04/2010 20:14

If I was your friend I think I would choose one of the middle names - there were loads of Mia's , Maia's etc born a few years ago and I think I know some classes with 4 or 5 kids with variations of this name.

jemimap · 05/04/2010 00:05

I too would pronounce Maya as May-ah if seen written down... I agree with Greenshadow that it is the traditional english way of pronouncing that sequence of letters. I much prefer Mia out of the three - said as Mee-a.

justnally · 05/04/2010 00:18

We have a Mia, but some people pronounce it My-ah. I love both, so don't mind at all and she finds it amusing

VengefulKitty · 05/04/2010 00:27

I have known Mayas and they have always been pronounced May-ah.

To me Mya has been pronounced My-ah and Mia is Mee-ah.

I love all of them, but particularly Maya. It was at the top of my short-list when PG.

Casmama · 05/04/2010 00:29

I would pronounce Maya as my-ah but prefer Mia - was going to use it for ds had he been a girl. I think Mia Louise sounds a lot better than Mia Anne as you have to pause between them to pronounce both a s and it sounds a bit like miaow!

alypaly · 05/04/2010 00:34

my friends name is mier and it is welsh i believe. It is a really pretty name

hophophippidtyhop · 05/04/2010 07:58

My dd is Mia,everyone says mee -a, except one friend who only sees her about twice a year, and I think that's more about forgetting she's a Mia rather than Mya!
