for a boy, what do you think?

It's Old English and means 'fenced meadow'

Really starting to like it.

It's a brand of soap isn't it?

mazzystartled · 24/03/2010 17:01

it's a brand of grannified toiletries

diedandgonetodevon · 24/03/2010 17:02

Evokes the smell of old ladies, frankly

DinahRod · 24/03/2010 17:04

It's a soap & cosmetics company favoured by old ladies such as my gt aunt. Think lavender and rose water.

Also similar in sound to Yardie, as in violent Jamaican gangster scum, to definitely avoided.

CuppaTeaJanice · 24/03/2010 17:05

That pungent perfume that everyone's granny used to wear.

Plus it's a bit like Yardie(sp?)

claricebeansmum · 24/03/2010 17:05

And too close to "yardie" for my liking

Shaz10 · 24/03/2010 17:05

Cheap perfume and tweed.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/03/2010 17:08

It's hilariously granny-ish.

Don't.

ChynaDoll2006 · 24/03/2010 17:09

DinahRod: 'Also similar in sound to Yardie, as in violent Jamaican gangster scum, to definitely avoided.'

In my circles, yardie just means young person recently immigrated from Jamaica. Does not mean they are violent or scum.

Forgetting the old lady stuff, anyone like it sound-wise?

Yep, I think old lady perfumes, I'm afraid.

pooka · 24/03/2010 17:10

OLd ladies here too, I'm afraid.

justallovertheplace · 24/03/2010 17:11

Old lady soap

cece · 24/03/2010 17:12

NomDePlume · 24/03/2010 17:13

Tweed and piss

The real original "Yardies" are Jamaian gang members (similar to the Japanese Yakuza or the Italian Mafia), chyna. I suspect the slang version you mention is new adoption.

janeite · 24/03/2010 17:14

It is a not v pleasant area of Birmingham.

lucy567 · 24/03/2010 17:14

awful

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 24/03/2010 17:16

How about Avon, after the river?

Sorry, that's mean of me.

lottiejenkins · 24/03/2010 17:21

It's simply beautiful and classic. Don't listen to the others, they are tasteless and downright mean.

DinahRod · 24/03/2010 17:31

Yardie gangs are notorious for their involvement in gun crime and the illegal drug trade, notably marijuana and crack cocaine where I originally come from. It's used as mostly a derogatory term or one that is meant to inspire "respect" i.e. fear.

Hullygully · 24/03/2010 17:33

It's a lovely name though, isn't it?

Pancakeflipper · 24/03/2010 17:34

It's gorgeous, reminds me of my Great Aunt who loved her Yardley products at Xmas.

ChynaDoll2006 · 24/03/2010 17:34

DinahRod... where I'm from people use the word yardie to include those people you're talking about, but others as well. Just anyone young who recently moved from Jamaica. Neutral term. (Brixton)
