There really is no name immune from being turned into a nickname, is there?

Ds2 told me today that there is a girl in his class called Olivia who gets called Oblivion.

I heard of an Amber being called Amberger.

Is no name safe?

My name is Ruth.
I have never had a real nickname in my life.

Hulababy · 22/03/2010 19:58

Olivia often gets shortened to Liv or Livvy IME.

DD is Mollie and hers gets shortened to Moll, and also lengthened a lot too.

My name is Claire. I never had it shortened at school, nor had a nn at school. I always wanted a nn! However my nana used to call be Clarabel

And even if names aren't shortened or lengthened, at school nn often occur from surnames or other traits anyway.

Knew a Ruth at school and she got called Roo.

RuthChan · 22/03/2010 20:05

I obviously missed out on NN then.
I can't have been worth renaming!!

Tyson86 · 22/03/2010 20:13

My mum calls my Archie, arch

Mum2T · 22/03/2010 22:00

Celia..it's truly nickname proof I reckon!

MyMamaToldMe · 22/03/2010 22:04

Have a friend called Celia and her name is shortened to Ce.

piscesmoon · 22/03/2010 22:11

You are right-no name is safe.We tried with DS and everyone calls him by his surname! (It is the sort of surname that people use as a first name).

HollyHo · 22/03/2010 22:20

Always been called either ClaireBear or Clarabel by people too.

hogshead · 22/03/2010 22:23

nope

my DH is a Michael and although he gets called Mick at work i've always known him as Hoggy

4andnotout · 22/03/2010 22:28

My brother is called Liam as mum wanted a name that couldn't be shortened after mine had been reduced to Soph by everyone, instead we called him LiLi or Liumsk, she tried again with Chloe but we call her Chlo!

All my dd's have nicknames, some from the family some from friends

lowrib · 22/03/2010 22:43

My MIL chose DP's name specifically because you can't easily turn it into a NN.

For nearly two decades now, almost everyone who knows him calls him a NN based on his surname!

You can't win this one!

I really don't get why people are so against nicknames anyway. I like that different people can call me different things. What's wrong with it?

Not all cultures do this, which surprised me when I first realised. My Danish mate tells me that this doesn't happen in Denmark - she finds it quite weird that we shorten our names.

piscesmoon · 23/03/2010 08:07

I think that it is quite nice that it is one area that parent's can't control! You can't stop it-especially if your DC likes it. I call all my DSs by their full names, but I am just about the only person who does.
(I know someone who called their DS Ian-on the grounds that it couldn't be shortened and he is known as 'E'!)

diddl · 23/03/2010 08:18

Never had my name shortened, but had nns re my height (or lack thereof)

pixiestix · 23/03/2010 12:52

Mum2T - we have a Celia in our office and everone calls her Ceals!

PanicMode · 23/03/2010 13:19

My name is very, very plain (three letters, though can be four, fairly old fashioned....) and my school NN bore NO resemblance at all to my real name, so I guess you are right!

notsoteenagemum · 23/03/2010 13:19

In my experience there is always a nn to be found,
by a natural shortening eg Jonathan to Jon/Jonnie,
by removing an 'ie' sound like Katie to Kate/Kat,
by adding an 'ie' sound like Rose to Rosie.

Dh is the worst nn creator, his phonebook is full of Daz's, Loz's , Jonesy's and even an Am's for Amy!

pixiestix · 23/03/2010 13:35

Ooh, how about "May" - I can't think of a nn for that!

TulipsInTheRain · 23/03/2010 13:36

well my don't have any logical nicknames... and were in fact picked on that basis!

i'm sure they'll find ways as teens though

Ewe · 23/03/2010 13:40

I am Lauren and my parents thought it was a name you couldn't really have a nn for.
