There really is no name immune from being turned into a nickname, is there?

Ds2 told me today that there is a girl in his class called Olivia who gets called Oblivion.

I heard of an Amber being called Amberger.

Is no name safe?

Oddly, nobody ever shortens my name, Michelle, despite the that that it has so many potential nicknames.

I've never expressed a preference either way.

Maybe I just don't seem like a nicknamy kinda person.

WhoIsAsking · 23/03/2010 14:03

Siân is very difficult to shorten. It tends to get lengthed to Siâny

(although at work it's "Shazzer" and my uncle calls me Stanley)

I'll shut up I think.

Fel1x · 23/03/2010 14:12

I've never had a nn and always wanted one! My name is Sarah

BigBadMummy · 23/03/2010 14:14

Anybody shortens my name of Tanya to Tan and they get thumped.

But then everybody calls me T.

Except the select few who call me TT but I can't tell you with that is

Lancelottie · 23/03/2010 14:18

My cousin is John.

He gets called Boggy

Fimbow · 23/03/2010 14:20

Ha my friend is called Tanya or T never ever Tan, maybe its YOU!

BigBadMummy · 23/03/2010 14:25

fimbow I am panicing now!

Fimbow · 23/03/2010 14:31

Just looked at your profile - you're safe!! It is funny though as my friend has 3 kids and is ever so slightly bonkers too!

UniS · 23/03/2010 14:51

Sarah is seldom shortened.
ditto paul.

Rockbird · 23/03/2010 14:58

Er, I beg to differ I'm a Sarah and I get Sare, Sares, Sally, Sally Ann and Sal. DH has only ever called me Sare, don't remember him ever using my full name and my brother always always calls me Sal. In fact my parents are the only ones to use Sarah.

AandO · 23/03/2010 15:02

My sister is called Sarah and we call her Sares, and my mom calls her Saresibabe.

My niece is called Mae and my sister calls her Mabel, or Mabelina, or even Maybe she's born with it!

All names have a nn.

arolf · 23/03/2010 15:03

my sister is Cordelia, and that never got nicknamed until she started work. I'm a Flora and was occasionally called Flora margarine until I injured someone quite badly for calling me that . then at one place of work I was wee Flo.

Jane doesn't get shortened much

piprabbit · 23/03/2010 15:03

I knew a Routh at school.
She was known as Roof, or Roofless.

Tortington · 23/03/2010 15:05

Kay.

i had a friend called Kay. never shortnened.

QuestionsAnswered · 23/03/2010 15:11

Custardo, did she never get called 'O'?

Tortington · 23/03/2010 15:11

no but good thinking

poppyknot · 23/03/2010 15:12

My mum called me Marmaduke. She doesn't know why.

Nickname does not really have to start with same letter as real name, although it's a good place to start.

themothershipcalling · 23/03/2010 15:34

My friends DD is an Olivia which my DD can't quite manage so she calls her Bia.... It has now spread, my Mother called me the other day to tell my she was knitting a cardie for Bia....

traceface · 23/03/2010 15:37

lancelottie is your cousin The Boggy, of radio 2 fame? He's called John isn't he?

We called ours Phoebe and Lucy, thinking there would be very few shortenings, but just get Phoebs, The Phoeb, Phoebster, Fifi (I really like that!), Phoebaroo... and Lu, Luce, Lu-pot, Lubi, Lubiloo, Luce-moose...

I'm a Tracey and have only ever been called Tracey or Trace - but I wouldn't name your child Tracey - I've never liked the name!

lisbey · 23/03/2010 15:46

Ruth - I know a Ruth who's father's called her Rhubarb since she was a child.

I also know a Paul who has been universally know as Teddy (now Ted) for 40 years, since the teacher put a picture of a bear he'd painted on the wall, with his name underneath, so even though his parents picked quite well on the no nickname front, it seems unavoidable

scully777 · 23/03/2010 15:47

My son's name is Leo. Not sure you can shorten that

muggglewump · 23/03/2010 15:48

I went to school with a Jom, not much you can do with that, yet he was always known as Noj (Nodge).

My brother is Jonathan and made it to his mid 30's before his name was shortened, and my Dad's name is Arthur, he's been called Bill for most of his life!

muggglewump · 23/03/2010 15:48

Jon, not Jom.

SPBInDisguise · 23/03/2010 15:49

a friend of mine's DP wanted to call their son J
