I have named 3 boys... so why can't I decide on a girls name and be happy with it for more than 2 weeks? :0/ Am not enjoying this at all....

With my boys I had 2 or 3 names we liked and managed to settle on one from about 36 weeks onwards - was nice toname the baby, get used to using the name, sort of giving the bump an identity.

Now I am 36 weeks preg with a girl and I just can't settle on anything for long. I think 'Yes! That's the name' then the more I think about it I end p thinking it's a bit boring and now the baby is un-named again - last 2 weeks she has been called Lydia.

Others include: Elle, Livia, Alexa/Alexis, Lily, Violet and DH threw Avril into the mix last night...

Why can't I do this when I have done it just fine 3 time sin the past?

I feel like I am 'unprepared'.

Lydia is lovely
I also love Alice

LadyOfTheFlowers · 16/03/2010 11:56

I always loved Lydia, until someone on here told me she will be called Lydia Chlamydia and I think that is what is holding me back.

I wouldn't have thoguht that TBH

LadyOfTheFlowers · 16/03/2010 12:00

Can't say it sprung into my mind either but it sort of planted a seed of doubt.

Just think if she DID get called it, I would feel absolutely terrible for her suffering a school life of misery when it had been pointed out to me as a possibility.

but don't you think that can happen with most names? If someone's going to tease your kid, they willfind something

We have a v unusual surname and I braced myself for teasing, but they haven't had any

LadyOfTheFlowers · 16/03/2010 12:04

I do really like Lydia and I don't think it is overly popular at the moment.

Can't think of a very good middle name though - single syllable ones seem to go best, we have an 'S' surname with 2 syllables.

I love Grace and Rose but those are 'the' middle names aren't they? Can't think of much else though to go with it.

I went to school with Lydia Chlamydia. It actually makes me think of Lydia Bennett more though, also not good.

You seem to like v popular names, all of which sound so ubiquitous after a while that there's just nothing individual about them. They are very 'oh another elle/lily/alexa'. They are also very cutesy, little girl type names. Do you really like cutesy or do they sound nice at first and then stop being appealing because there's nothing robust about them? Just musing here, trying to pin down what's troubling you.

There have been a couple of nice girls name threads on here. One in particular... hang on...

For example.

What are your boys called?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 16/03/2010 12:22

I have had the discussion about popularity which is why we have not chosen Elle, Lily or Alexa.

1 of my boys' names has recently exploded in popularity whereas it wasn't popular in 2006 when he was born.

DS3s' name seems to be picking up too and it wasn't popular last year when he was born.

I am not generally 'into' popular names but i don't want to call her Delphine or Beatrix or the like as they are a bit too 'out there' for me.

Can't say I saw much on the thread you linked to that was particularly unpopular.

How do I find a name with more substance then?
I am only going to have one daughter so I need the right name.

Am not meaning to come across shirty by the way - really want to get this cracked.

How about Anna? (Am biased - DD's name after much debate with DH and it working it's way slowly up the name list) For us it was a name that she could grow into in any way she suited - gentle or loud character etc.

Maybe the name problem is just the suprise of having a girl on the way after 3 boys? Perhaps you are still in a bit of shock about it and that's why you can't envisage having a daughter you name? Or just that there are so many girls names out there!

ShowOfHands · 16/03/2010 12:52

Oh I didn't read the thread in its entirety, just searched on here to show you that there are lots of threads devoted to girls names suggestions/opinions. Having a trawl through them sometimes introduces a great name you might not have thought of.

It is hard. A good starting point is perhaps thinking of names of people you admire throughout history or through your own life, heroines of literature and film, writers, revolutionaries etc. Something with provenance. That can add weight and perhaps personal meaning.

Otherwise, look at the enormous list of names at the end of films/tv programmes and see if anything jumps out, or wander round a bookshop idly looking at authors names. Don't try and decide on one but just let them wash over you.

I currently love the name Aphra. It makes me think of the brilliant writer, it's also different and pretty sounding. It has more to it than it just sounds fairly nice iyswim.

And if you think Beatrix and Delphine are out there, then I think your tastes are far tamer than mine. Beatrix and Delphine are mildly unusual but recognisable to all. Out there is something different entirely.

Also, ask your boys what names they like. My dd has great taste in names and likes names I'd never think of.

DiamondHead · 16/03/2010 13:01

I feel for you.
I had two boys and then a daughter. I had no bother naming the boys and I could name another 7 in about 10 minutes. My daughter, however was about 6 weeks by the time she had a name.

How about -
Matilda (Tilly) - that's strong but feminine and is popular enough that it won't be considered 'out there'.
Cecily
Florence
Dorothy
Juliet
Marina

diddl · 16/03/2010 13:40

I love Lydia.
Not keen on Avril.

LittleWhiteWolf · 16/03/2010 13:53

I love Lydia. Doesnt make me think of the STD at all--in fact my first thought is always the youngest sister in Pride and Predjudice and I'm not even a big Austen fan!

TubbyDuffs · 16/03/2010 13:54

I had no problem agreeing my two DSs' names and even had girl alternatives (as we didn't know what we were having); however I really struggled with a girl's name for my last pregnancy.

I had a boy's name, but couldn't agree with DH on a girl's name, he liked some really awful ones and hated anything I came up with.

Again, we didn't know what sex the baby was and I was getting a bit worried.

We still didn't have a name when she was born and it was only in the evening that a name was agreed on. I had been calling her Baby No Name all day, and suddenly thought of Naomi. Luckily my DH liked it and that was that.

Naomi wasn't even on my list of names and I hadn't even considered it, but somehow it really suits her.

Trust me, you'll find a name.

When I was in hospital with my first DS, a lady who gave birth at the same time went home calling her baby Yoda until she could think of a name!

mathanxiety · 16/03/2010 15:17

This thread had some really fabulous names.

Maybe after three boys you're just doing your best to wrap your heads around the idea of having a girl? Maybe she's a very unknown quantity right now? The names you're considering are 'stereotypical' girl names, rather than individual girl names, IYKWIM despite how clumsily I'm expressing myself.

swanandduck · 16/03/2010 15:50

I love Lydia. By the time she's going to Secondary School, the Lydia Chlamydia thing will probably have died a death.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 16/03/2010 16:23

Thanks for further replies.

I LOVE Lois but it tends to bleed into our surname as it ends with S and sounds like 'Lowie'.

I have always been quite keen on Anya too.

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 16/03/2010 17:02

I love Lydia. Violet is quite sweet but getting more popular. Anya is nice enough. The Ellie/Evie/Lexie/Lily/Olivia type names are ten a penny.

My current favourites are Eliza, Martha, Florence, Beatrice, Bridget, Edith and Juliet

fanjolina · 16/03/2010 17:09

Anya is lovely

What about Eloise?

Northernlurker · 16/03/2010 17:10

Meg

Amelia

Emma

Tess

sweetkitty · 16/03/2010 17:14

Ladyoftheflowers - are you me in a parallel universe by any chance.

I am 33 weeks with a boy after 3 girls, the girls' names jumped out at us, DD1 had hers the minute we found out she was a girl and the other two definitely by 30 weeks. We thought we were having another girl had her names all chosen and several in reserve. Now that this one is a boy we are so stuck.

Lydia pretty as is Anya

MissusRabbit · 16/03/2010 17:24

Lydia is a lovely name and i never linked it to the STD either....

I love Alexa, Violet and Anya from you lists too....although they are different naming styles i think.....are you bothered if the name 'goes' with your boy names or not? That might make a difference...

I've had a nightmare choosing for this baby too (am 36 weeks also) so you have my sympathies...as DH says they become what you name them so stop stressing

HelenDoula · 16/03/2010 17:50

I knew a Lydia (she was known as Lydia Teapot) ... not such a nice girl so not keen on the name !
Avril ..... sounds kinda hard !

What are your boys called?

nelly83 · 16/03/2010 20:16

how about these names...

Niamh
Martha
Scarlett
Beatrice (Bea)
Ivy
Georgia
Sophia
Lydia
Alexandria
Charlotte
Jayne
Rosalie
Esmee
Maggie

Are any of these to your taste? Boys names are much easier to choose!

nelly83 · 16/03/2010 20:17
