Please can you give me some examples of names you consider middle class and names you consider upper class - thanks.

Oh, please. Let's try to be a bit more open and international in our outlook. I'm not English and really find this attitude annoying.

Lets please judge people on their personality not their name!

sonniebonnie · 19/02/2010 14:28

I agree, annasophia. The whole class thing is rather old fashioned and we should try to be a little less insular in our attitudes.

I've lived in the US for a couple of years and found people there to be much less concerned with class and status. People are judged by who they are not what name their parents have chosen for them (for whatever reasons).

I'm not saying anything. It will definitely end in tears.

Well, except to say one thing, (can't resist) which is that even in the US I have seen lists of 'names destined for Harvard'.

SqueezyB · 19/02/2010 17:08

what is 'upper class' these days anyway? I could give you a list of names I find pretentious, but I won't for fear of upsetting anyone using those names!

sailorsgal · 19/02/2010 17:19

DH middle name is Pelham. Upper class, I think not.

bellissima · 19/02/2010 18:12

Erm (okay I'm saying something else!) - Pelham just says 70s cult movie to me.

mopsyflopsy · 19/02/2010 18:33

This type of question only reinforces the whole (silly) stereotyping.

Do we really need to categorise names by class? Can't we just choose names for our children that we love, that have meaning to us and that sound good with our surname and not have to worry about what 'class' a name belongs?

mopsyflopsy · 19/02/2010 18:39

And many names that Brits consider posh or chav are regarded very differently in other countries.

As the world becomes more global and your children are likely to live abroad (for a while or longer), lets become a bit more open minded about names.

I don't think names fall into a particular class these days. Somebody mentioned that Daisy, Abigail, Harry and Max are MC but all children I know with these names are very WC!

sailorsgal · 19/02/2010 20:53

mrsvwoolf, thats where the name came from. Dh did go to public school so I guess the name is fairly posh.

Ziggurat · 19/02/2010 20:58

Hyacinth Bucket...?

Gobsmacked that someone would prioritise class over actually liking a name. How lower class.

teafortwo · 19/02/2010 21:04

mopsyflopsy - That is a very good point! For example - I know two quite posh Parisian boys called Kevin.

mummyjackson · 19/02/2010 21:07

Lol I agree with the Hyacinth Bucket comment

mrsruffallo · 19/02/2010 21:10

What a silly OP

Tortington · 19/02/2010 21:12

why not working class? are you prejudiced?

teafortwo · 19/02/2010 21:15

Not that Kevin is a horrible name but it isn't the first name that comes to mind when you see a little rich boy.

...and equally names that I, being English, consider to sound quite posh are actually fairly 'populaire' in France.

LuciaRose - What names do you like at the mo?

crankytwanky · 19/02/2010 21:21

Why?
