Hi everyone I'm new here!

Just wanted to see what you thought of Scirocco for a girl? I am aware it is a VW, but the name came first! Apparently it is Italian for warm breeze.

Personally I love it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't sound ridiculous!

TIA!

God no!

Flightattendant · 19/02/2010 10:25

erm,

thelunar66 · 19/02/2010 10:28

No. Its a car that rusted very badly in the 80s and was discontinued. The new version they just brought out looks bland.

If it's car names you like, what about Marina?

Rindercella · 19/02/2010 10:28

Isn't it a wind?? Anyway, no.

I knew someone who called her DDs Sequoia (a redwood tree) and errr Tsunami. Yes really.

Scirocco is not quite as bad but I think it does bring the car to mind.

MoChan · 19/02/2010 10:41

It makes me think of the car. But also brings to mind names like Rocco and Roxy, neither of which I like. So no.

Jenbot · 19/02/2010 12:49

I have fond memories of our old Scirocco. So why not.

crumpet · 19/02/2010 12:54

Great name. Don't underestimate the public benefit of making someone laugh. Would lift my day no end

seeker · 19/02/2010 12:55

A Scirocco is not a warm breeze - it is a horrible howling hot gale. Often containing stinging red dust. Very nasty indeed. And hard to spell and pronounce.

seeker · 19/02/2010 12:55

Oh, and Italin words ending in -o are masculine.

Collision · 19/02/2010 12:59

The boy's name Scirocco \s(i)-roc-
co, scir(o)-
cco, also used as girl's name Scirocco, is of Italian and Arabic origin, and its meaning is "warm wind". The word was originally a description of the wind that blew over Italy from the Libyan deserts.

NO!!!!! and how are you pronouncing it?

a double cc in Italian is a 'ch' sound in English so Scirocco (I think) is actually SCIROTCHO

tearinghairout · 19/02/2010 12:59

Noooooooooooo

It's a nice word but please, not a name for a child. She will hate it.

Collision · 19/02/2010 13:01

No - am wrong - it is a hard 'c' so Sci-rocko

Still NO NO NO!!!!!

MaggieMaeve · 19/02/2010 13:02

schee rocco is quite a hard sound i think.

also, it sounds like a boy's name.... well, no it doesn't. but i'd guess that a human Scirocco were a boy.

What about Mistral!? or Scimitar!? Princess Anne used to drive a Scimitar (apparently.... comes up in pub quizzes occasionally )

hth

Collision · 19/02/2010 13:03

Astra is pretty!!

MaggieMaeve · 19/02/2010 13:05

what about Clio? I love that.

crumpet · 19/02/2010 13:06

Come on you nay-sayers, it will bring pleasure to so many people in a way that a bog standard name just won't do

crumpet · 19/02/2010 13:07

(ps I nearly called dd Clio)

HalcyonDaze · 19/02/2010 13:07

Honestly? It's awful. Sorry.

seeker · 19/02/2010 13:13

It's pronounced Schi-rocco. But it's not a name for a child under any circumstances.

Collision · 19/02/2010 13:15

heehee! This website is cool for pronounciations!

Scirocco

seeker · 19/02/2010 13:35

LOVE that site, collision! Something good's come out of this thread. Now all we have to do is to persuade the OP not to name her child after a particularly unpleasant meterological phenomenon and our work here will be done!

Ziggurat · 19/02/2010 13:41

Take all the chav bad aspects of Rocco for a non-Italian male, and multiply them to the power of 10.

ChynaDoll2006 · 19/02/2010 13:52

Okay then, what about Socorro, means 'help' and its a Roman Catholic name. I'm not Catholic or Spanish but oh well.
