Poor first Mrs Rochester.

Or Big Bertha

Blanchet · 01/02/2010 13:01

Big Bertha.

She would not thank you for it.

myredcardigan · 01/02/2010 13:11

Mad or big

Littlefish · 01/02/2010 13:12

monetinjanuary · 01/02/2010 13:14

Her peers wouldn't know about the woman in the attic or Big Bertha would they?
I think this is prettier than Martha.

But it's just a bit of a joke name, generally. It's like Gertude or something. I think the kids would come home and tell their parents about their new classmate Bertha, and the parents' reactions would influence their view of the name even if the kids thought it was fine before. "Big Bertha" just seems to be a cliche now; I only found out recently that it refers to a weapon (? or a tank, was it?) - it's become a common phrase like "Plain Jane".

LightLyric · 01/02/2010 13:23

Dreadful.

Blanchet · 01/02/2010 13:26

To be fair, it is quite nice in other languages where it's pronounced "Bear-tah", but the English "Burth-uh" is horrid.

Bucharest · 01/02/2010 13:28

It's a Doris sort of name.
It's my Aunty Bertha's name. Obviously. Size of a house.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 01/02/2010 13:29

but imagine if she's chubby, you can't land that on a child.

I think it's pretty actually, reminds me of blossoms for some reason. Bit like Martha, a nice soft name.

Jojay · 01/02/2010 13:34

Awful. No no no.

PotPourri · 01/02/2010 13:34

What about Roberta and then you can call her Bertha as a shortened version?? Doesn't seem as horrid when it is a shortened version for some reason

zozzle · 01/02/2010 13:39

No - fat springs to mind for me too
