What do you think of Bertha as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

think of what you like about the name then try and think of something similar that has those qualities...

like a name beginning with B which is a bit unusual?

Beatrice
Bianca etc

like the soft sound?

Martha
Bethany etc

but Bertha hasn't any nice qualities IMO, apologies to any Bertha's out there!

Good idea. I like Albertha or Alberta. Would that work?

Albertine's pretty too , like the rose

preggiemeggie · 01/02/2010 14:50

I dislike Bertha too I'm sorry... definitely makes me think 'big Bertha'. Albertha is a bit close to Bertha maybe (!), Alberta makes me think of a place in the US. Albertine is nice, or Alba? She could be Allie too then, which is nice IMO.

Nooooooooooooo!

Momdeguerre · 01/02/2010 16:36

Sorry, conjures up images of obese middle aged women. Can't even imagine anattractive abbreviation.

mummyloveslucy · 01/02/2010 16:40

I think it's awful, makes me think "Big Birtha". (sorry)

LetThereBeRock · 01/02/2010 19:41

Hideous.

preggersplayspop · 01/02/2010 19:48

Its not a pretty name at all. Its maybe the 'urrr' sound as you say it.

Martha is much softer.

PanicMode · 01/02/2010 19:55

We call our large 7 seater car Big Bertha so for me it's a large, non feminine name

janeite · 01/02/2010 19:58

No, no, no - it is a shot-putter name imvho. Sorry - just no.

Martha otoh is lovely.

ruddynorah · 01/02/2010 20:03

tis kids tv show to me

JoeyBettany · 01/02/2010 20:06

But the 'burrr' sound is soft surely-as in a 'soft country burr'

I think this name is about 20 years off a renaissance-there weren't any Martha's around when I was a kid, there are plenty too manynow!

BlauerEngel · 01/02/2010 20:19

But Martha has this sort of healthy, mc New England 'Martha's Vineyard' connotation, whereas Bertha is fat and mad in the attic. The peers might not be aware of that, but the parents will.

NotAnOtter · 01/02/2010 20:55

cute as anything and i would swoon if I met a baby girl one

Doris is a veritable vixen compared with Bertha.

If she ends up carrying a a little extra weight, she will be ripped a new one, with a name like Bertha.

NotAnOtter · 01/02/2010 21:04

I think Martha could sound a bit severe - I was allegedly nicknamed Bertha in the hospital by the nurses!

NotAnOtter · 01/02/2010 21:05

when i was a neonate i hasten to add!

onlyjoinedforoffers · 01/02/2010 21:20

makes me think of that Goodies song Blackpudding Bertha she`s the queen of northern soul

choosyfloosy · 01/02/2010 21:30

Sorry, cant go with this one.

Beata?

fortyplus · 01/02/2010 21:47

umami! snap, that was my 1st thought!

mathanxiety · 02/02/2010 03:17

Now Martha shrieks fusty middle aged women with no makeup on manning the pie table at the church shindig, dressed in smocks and pinafores and all very earnest. Mind you the only Martha I know under age 50 is a goth.

I love Bianca, Beata, Beatrice and Alba.
