Digby?

It may be the hormones/ insomnia talking but I think I may like the name Digby .

DH and I both like the whole old name thing and have been pretty settled on Wilbur for a while now but I am suddenly having a wobble!

What do you think?

May I draw your attention to 'Potty Fartwell & Knob' ISBN 978-0-7553-1655-7

Not loving either name, tbh. Digby is too surnamey/place-namey for me. Wilbur a bit too animal-like even though I'm not sure where that's from... if you like old-fasioned "Wil" names, how about Wilfred/Wilfrid maybe? "Wilf" is a pretty awful nickname though.

Momdeguerre · 30/01/2010 17:32

I like Wilfred but really not keen on Freddie which it is bound to get abbreviated too - I like Wilf.

Very late to this...I have a Digby (born 07). Couldn't give a monkey's arse what anyone else thinks otherwise I wouldn't have chosen it Wink

How very rude some people are. 'I can't think of anything nice to say about the name Digby'. Nice. Normally a 'doesn't do it for me' will suffice.

Shortenings here include Diggy, Digs, Diggydo, Diggory, MrDigs, Digger...etc etc.

It's a posh name. That's ok. I'm posh. Shoot me if you dare Grin

I hope you can afford to send him to private school because that is not a name that lends itself to your average playground.

belsnwhistles · 16/05/2018 06:31

I appreciate this thread is old... wondering what name you decided on... I have a three year old called Wilbur and am expecting number 2 in a month and stumbled on your thread as I'm researching the name Digby, which I love!

Mrsknackered · 16/05/2018 07:07

Digby is great for an airedale!

I like Wilbur, but I don’t think I’d be brave enough to do it. It’s a little mean as pig references are likely to be made. What about?

Dogs name

I know a few Digbys of various ages. It's a bit ridiculous but sort of works. If you love it, go for it. I definitely prefer it to Wilbur.

ThePug · 16/05/2018 19:58

@belsnwhistles I can't believe you found & commented on this thread! I too am considering Digby for DS2 and read this thread the other day. My DS1 is a Ralph, which was literally the only name we could come up with, so when we found out baby 2 was another boy we were seriously worried about finding a name. Digby is the only one so far that we both seem to like but I'm worried it's a bit too unusual. Do you have any more on a shortlist you can share? I have 3.5 months to decide at least! Oh, and I think Wilbur is a great name Smile

Pressuredrip · 16/05/2018 23:49

I really love it. It was on my list for dd2 if she were a boy. Sadly I forgot about it for dc3 who was a boy. He'd REALLY suit Digby actually. Sad

Pressuredrip · 16/05/2018 23:50

Christ, 8 years old!

RedDwarves · 16/05/2018 23:57

Digby is awful (and autocorrects to Rugby).

Wilbur is fine, but the pig associations let it down. I think it’ll be alright among the many Wilfreds nowadays though; it’ll mute the pig slightly.

Joeybee · 17/05/2018 01:27

I like Digby. I prefer Rigby though.

buttercup54321 · 17/05/2018 03:26

Digby the dog in my mind. Awful for a child having to grow up with that. Wilbur is slightly better but a pig springs to mind there. At least he could be Will or Bill though. I think you are right. Its your hormones!!!

ThePug · 17/05/2018 19:41

The last few posters need to read the comments properly as recent poster who resurrected this thread was not asking for opinions on Wilbur - she already has a DS named this so your comments are rather rude.

And saying it's a pig - that's ONE book/film that was popular about 25 years ago! I was wondering how much longer it'd take someone to say Digby is the big dog. That's like all I got when mentioning Ralph on here ref the bloody Judy Bloom penis book. I'm a few years too young for that so had never heard of it and have never had any comments about it in real life, same as the giant dog film. @belsnwhistles I'd be really interested to know if you go for it as it's firmly on my yet-to-become-a-list!

belsnwhistles · 17/05/2018 22:53

Thanks @ThePug I will keep you posted! Funnily enough, we named our son Wilbur as I read Charlottes Web to my then 6 year old daughter while pregnant and we all fell in love with the empathetic and delightful Wilbur the pig and consequently the name.
