Digby?

It may be the hormones/ insomnia talking but I think I may like the name Digby .

DH and I both like the whole old name thing and have been pretty settled on Wilbur for a while now but I am suddenly having a wobble!

What do you think?

I quite often get the 'animal' connection raised as a comment but not fussed by that - all names have connections to something.

Still like both, think Wilbur probably has more flexibility with abbreviations etc, quite like it shortened to Bill or Wil.

We did consider Diggory but it reminds me too much of Harry Potter - Cedric Diggory.

Awful. It's a dog's name.

I don't like Wilbur either but it's an improvement on Digby.

seeker · 28/01/2010 13:54

Sorry - both try-too-hard-look-at-me-aren't-I-an-individual.

allaboutme · 28/01/2010 14:46

I like both. Digby I think could work better as a kids name as it doesnt sound quite so grown up as Wilbur.

What is your DS1's name - does it seem to 'go' better with either of them?

shoobidoo · 28/01/2010 15:40

I like them both. I know dogs named Jack, Tom and Oscar, so imo any name can be a pet's name.

I don't see what is wrong with making giving our children as individual names as possible - isn't that the whole idea of 'naming' something or someone? To make it/them uniquely identifiable.

shoobidoo · 28/01/2010 15:42

Sorry, please ignore the making above - didn't preview

Momdeguerre · 28/01/2010 16:21

My DS is Charles, usually known as Chip.

The biggest dog in the world!
Twas my little sister's fave film, used to watch it 5 times a day.

doubleexpresso · 28/01/2010 18:14

I love it. He could become an archaeologist!

mummyloveslucy · 28/01/2010 18:24

Wilbur sounds like a pig, and Digby sounds like a dog.

GoddessInTheKitchen · 28/01/2010 18:38

charles/chip and wilbur sounds better than charles/chip and digby

charles and digby put together sounds extremely posh.. unless of course you are posh and proud

mathanxiety · 28/01/2010 18:45

Did somebody say Toby? Much better than Digby, which is itself far better than Wilbur (pig to me).

Wallace · 28/01/2010 19:17

I like Digby.

Momdeguerre · 28/01/2010 19:37

I probably would be defined as a ponce by Mumsnet standards. No 4x4 but public school all the way!

Wilbur was such a cute pig!!! Also the name of one of the Wright brothers! Not so sure of infamous Digbys!

Sorry, not a fan of Toby but I like the whole old fashioned name thing, not as keen on choosing alternative names but these two are the only ones we can agree on! DH wants to call the baby Marmaduke - Duke for short but I am not convinced.

mathanxiety · 28/01/2010 20:10

How about Orville then?

purpleduck · 28/01/2010 20:28

wilbur is a pig
digby is a dog
Orville is a popcorn maker extraordinaire

see

HANG ON! Orville and Wilbur were the Wright brothers names.... are you some kind of airplane fanatic mathanxiety??

purpleduck · 28/01/2010 20:29

btw all are child abuse

mathanxiety · 28/01/2010 21:02

One of the DCs recently did a project on inventors . I love the popcorn though.

purpleduck · 28/01/2010 21:15

me too

bibbitybobbityhat · 28/01/2010 21:17

I admire you very much for having the balls to go with either. They are both great! Digby just edges it for me.

Georgimama · 28/01/2010 21:18

Marmaduke is also a dog's name.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 28/01/2010 21:28

I wanted Digby but my DH vetoed it because of the dog thing. And I wanted Jemima but he vetoed it for the duck thing.

But I still think Digby is a great, solid, superb name. Go for it!

ohnoherewego · 28/01/2010 21:32

I know 2 adult Digbys; both suceesful lawyers!

BalloonSlayer · 28/01/2010 21:32

WorkingitOut I am at the thought of you potentially having a Digby and a Jemima.

I used to know someone whose Mum and Dad were called Chloe and Rex. Chloe wasn't the popular little girl's name then as it is now, and I used to think they sounded like a dog and a cat.

GibbonInARibbon · 28/01/2010 21:36

Too 'aren't we quirky' and try hard for me.

Won't someone please think of the children! (or child in this case)
