Hello all. Advice needed on our latest name choice - Cécile.
We really want a French name to keep her French identity as she grows up in UK. I am English, papa is French! However we would like a name that can not be pronounced in different ways such as Anais.
Our latest choice is Cécile Rose. Too old fashioned?

I think its lovely

pointydug · 24/01/2010 10:42

It's ok. More Cecil sounding in English. Do you like Clara?

duchesse · 24/01/2010 10:45

Celeste? I really wanted this for DD1's middle name, but my husband thought it was too French. I should have stuck to my guns because she hates the middle name we compromised on.

MaggieNilAonSneachta · 24/01/2010 10:45

I like it. I prefer Cecily though but it's just easier for me to say

Celine? is that a bit softer. British people possible more familiar with its prononciation.

duchesse · 24/01/2010 10:46

BTW Cecilia can be either English or French. But then I love Cécile. Just wish my husband weren't such a stick in the mud Englishman.

LynetteScavo · 24/01/2010 10:51

I do like Cecile, but Celeste is slightly nicer, IMO.

frakkinaround · 24/01/2010 11:14

Cecile (or Cecilie) is my choice for a DD!

frakkinaround · 24/01/2010 11:20

Should point out I'm going the other way though as we're based in France. Need a name the English will understand or as sneakily Enlgish-made-to-look-French as I can get a way with! Hence Cecilie, which is just a Frenchified spelling of Cecily but doesn't actually exist in French. Don't know whether I'lll be allowed that though.

mopsyflopsy · 24/01/2010 11:57

I thought Cecil was a boys name?

tethersend · 24/01/2010 12:11

Celine?

TheBossofMe · 24/01/2010 12:14

I think its a gorgeous name, as is Cecilie/Cecily. Celine makes me think of the mad Dion woman....

crumpette · 24/01/2010 14:26

Cécile is a beautiful name. I like the nn Célie as well, really rare and pretty imo. Hate Celine though!

slim22 · 24/01/2010 14:39

watch this
hope you speak french!

momofnearly2 · 24/01/2010 16:16

Cécile is a beautiful name.

Please don't call her Celeste or Celine. They are awful.

Thank you for all your comments.

I love the link to "Cecile ma fille", though Franck's (DH) sing along I could have done without!!

He translated it for me ... I think I need to learn French or DH and DD are going to have an absolute hoot chinwagging without me understanding a word. DH already has a bank of French music to play to her which included this song!!!

Cécile certainly has a beautiful ring to it.

Thanks again

XC

Cecile is a v pretty name! I'm not sure keen on Rose as a mn because everyone is using it

mitfordsisters · 24/01/2010 19:27

Gorgeous name!

ClaireVictoria · 24/01/2010 21:51

I know what you mean about Rose. Also Cecile Rose sounds like Cecil Rhodes - not an association I really want!!

Lovely

There's always Fleur?

LittlePushka · 24/01/2010 22:58

Love Cecile!

Do not think it goes with Rose (agree with ClaireVictoria on that one!)

Must be zillions of other beautiful French middle names though...

nighbynight · 24/01/2010 23:01

Cécile Rose is a lovely choice.

slim22 · 25/01/2010 00:52

I think Cecile Rose works very well in both languages
Old fashioned is the new trendy isn't it?
