What are your thoughts on this name? It is very unusual and is Biblical I think?

I have never met one so I find it hard to imagine on a person, but I am really falling for it. My husband loves the name Finn so I think I may be able to sway him.

..and Ferb, a cartoon my children love ! Just thought you should know the association.

TheresSnowDragonHere · 19/01/2010 12:55

DSs like Phineas and Ferb the cartoon . Which kind of ruins the name for me

lilolilmanchester · 19/01/2010 12:55

prefer Finn TBH....

clayre · 19/01/2010 12:55

its the name of a cartoon character on the disney channel that my ds loves, i cant judge it as a real baby's name i just thinkof the cartoon!

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 19/01/2010 12:56

I'm a very big fan of Trollope, but even I would draw the line at Phineas. Stick with Finn.

Awful.Finn is much nicer.

MrsWainwright · 19/01/2010 13:03

I just think it looks and sounds so beautiful. I'm quite surprised by the negative reaction. I have never seen or heard of the cartoon.

I rather like it, probably because The Pallisers was shown during my formative years and Phineas Finn was rather cute.

momofnearly2 · 19/01/2010 13:39

Isn't one of Julia Roberts twins called Phineas? (I could be very very wrong)

I love it with Finn as a nn.

Never heard of the cartoon.

Merrylegs · 19/01/2010 13:43

Kind of looks and sounds like Penis. I know, childish, but then he will be growing up with children.......

not keen. it sounds like you want to use Finn, but realise that's quite mainstream now, so you are turning it in to Phinneas. I think I prefer Fintan, Finbar, Finian, Findlay, just about every other version!

What about Fionn. The Irish version of Findlay. It is pronounced Fyunn. Not FeeOn. One syllable. Fyunn.
maybe you have to be irish to like that one!

Iklboo · 19/01/2010 14:07

Yes - Phineas an Ferb is one of my DS's favourite TV shows at the moment.

Perry....Perry the Playpus!!

Sorry, the show might not be on anymore when your DS goes to school so no-one may get the association then. Unless they have older siblings. Finn is a gorgeous name though

Iklboo · 19/01/2010 14:07

Platypus, not Playpus

expatinscotland · 19/01/2010 14:08

Why not name him 'Beat me up in the school yard'?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 19/01/2010 14:08

I like it.

BadGardener · 19/01/2010 14:09

I used to know one - long before poncy names were fashionable.
It always struck me as quite a good sort of poncy name because if the kid didn't like it they could shorten it to Finn which has a very different set of associations.
Come to think of it, the one I knew aged 7ish used to run around pretending to be a superhero called SuperPhin.

bellissima · 19/01/2010 14:44

I too remember the Pallisers - used to beg to stay up and watch. But yes I wouldn't really use Phineas. What was the name of the cad Susan H loved- Burgo? Fitzgerald. (bellissima knows that she should be cultured and read the book ).

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 19/01/2010 14:48

How dare you call my Burgo a cad.

GrimmaTheNome · 19/01/2010 15:43

Burgo was a cad - you should have stuck to Plantagenet, LGP

You know, Trollope could be a useful resource for anyone looking for unusual names!

CheerfulYank · 19/01/2010 15:58

I like it. And I thought Ms Roberts spelled her DS Phineas as well?

sasamaxx · 19/01/2010 16:02

Don't like it - sorry - Fionn much nicer imo or one the other 'fin' type names
