Juliet, Alice, Eleanor .....

Agonising over girls' names - dp won't go with my favourites (Martha, Hannah) so I think we're going to end up with a compromise. Current shortlist is something like:

Juliet
Alice
Francesca
Eleanor (Nell)
Lucy
Alexandra

Would love to hear brutally honest thoughts on these, or suggestions for others. I also really like Sarah but surname begins with R so a bit too much of a mouthful

I like Alice best of your your list, and think it is the most like your favs in cadence.

yellowflowers · 18/01/2010 23:22

I love Eleanor with Nell as nickname. They are all nice names though.

nigglewiggle · 18/01/2010 23:26

We are on a similar wavelength.

We had Juliet, Alice and Francesca on our shortlist.

Obviously those are my favourites and I think Juliet is top. We didn't choose it as it was the name of one of DH's ex-girlfriends!

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 18/01/2010 23:28

all good, imo.

MamaG · 18/01/2010 23:29

Yep I like all

would choose Alice but i like em all

momofnearly2 · 18/01/2010 23:32

I love Martha. Shame your Dp doesn't.

I prefer Eleanor from your list though.

I had S R has my initials, I also knew in primary school of a Sarah Rogers and a Sarah Riley so don't think it's a mouthful.

nooka · 19/01/2010 06:43

I knew twins called Juliet and Fran(cesca) both lovely. I really Eleanor too. Less keen on Lucy, Alice and Alexandra.

frakkinaround · 19/01/2010 07:01

I would spell Eleanor differently but that's just me! I also don't particularly Nell for short. Reminds me of Nellie in the Little House books.

Francesca doesn't stand up to the multilingual test (falls down when said by French, Dutch and Chinese people) which is a shame as it's a lovely name but if you DD ever wants to move abroad there's nothing more irritating than having your name mispronounced by everyone.

I don't like Lucy because I knew one in primary school and she was really wet and a total teachers pet.

I think Juliet and Alice are my favourites. But I also have a big soft spot for Alexandra because the one I know is very cool!

Names are so subjective, aren't they!

TigerFeet · 19/01/2010 07:32

all great names imo

dd1's name is on there

also dsis, whose name i have always loved and would have used myself had it not been used for such a close famiy member

i adore juliet - vetoed by dh iirc

GibbonInARibbon · 19/01/2010 07:43

All lovely.

SqueezyB · 19/01/2010 09:13

I LOVE Juliet - would be right up there in our list, but my SIL is Julia and it's too similar. The others are all pretty though.

BridesheadRegardless · 19/01/2010 09:17

Juliet and Alexandra both gorgeous. Strong feminine names.

Alex and Jules cool nicknames if they want to shorten it later.

Eleanor too many.
lucy can be drippy.
francesca nice but a bit fussy.

none of them bad though.

Rachybabes · 19/01/2010 11:05

Alice!!!!....a beautiful name, quirky and timeless!! xxx

loobylu3 · 19/01/2010 14:49

Juliet- love it! Beautiful and classic
Alice- as above
Francesca- love this too! Feminine and exotic.
Eleanor (Nell)- ditto- one of my favourite classics. I dislike the nn Ellie, Nell so much nicer
Lucy-pretty and timeless
Alexandra- the only one from your list I don't really like. I don't like Alex at all.

Personally, I prefer your current list to Martha and Hannah. They are a bit serious and Biblical for my taste, though perfectly nice names

crumpette · 19/01/2010 17:47

Lucy is my favourite

Juliet and Alice are lovely

Francesca is lovely name but will be called 'frankie' by peers

Alexandra will be called Alex which I hate on a girl

Eleanor nn Nell is fab but will be called nellie the elephant...

piscesmoon · 19/01/2010 17:57

I have never been able to say it on mumsnet before-I love them all!!

janeite · 19/01/2010 18:00

Juliet - like it
Alice - love it
Francesca - ok
Eleanor (Nell) - love it but prefer Elinor
Lucy - ok
Alexandra - don't like

My favourites are Alice and Elinor.

StealthPolarBear · 19/01/2010 18:03

so pleased Alice is loved, she is chewing my shoulder atm

CantSupinate · 19/01/2010 18:08

I think that they are all quite nice.

MaggieNilAonSneachta · 19/01/2010 18:14

Juliet Alice
Juliet Eleanor.

They're all nice but I'd go for Juliet Alice. That's beautiful.

bourgie · 20/01/2010 19:27

Thanks so much everyone - I know it's all very subjective but it's always good to check things out and make sure you're not about to make a terrible mistake.... For some reason I can't mention the potential names to friends in case they go 'ugh' to all of them (am hoping they'll be more polite once the deed is done).

I had the same worries as crumpette about 'Nellie the Elephant' so glad that's not just me...

I think it's probably between Juliet and Alice now, hope will have a moment of inspiration when I see her face. Just need to push her out now (6 days overdue...)

I'm due 1st DC in 6 weeks time

We think it's a girl (60% sure from the scan) and we've picked the name Juliet for baby if it is a girl.

My mum hates the name, thinks it's really silly, which is upsetting, but tbh, it's not her choice to make.

In relation to your name choices bourgie, I think they are all lovely; you have good taste.

BrigitBigKnickers · 20/01/2010 20:28

Love Eleanor (DDs name but she prefers Ellie spelt EllE ) Quite like Nell as a shortened version- never thought of that!

maxpower · 20/01/2010 20:32

crumpet , bourgie I have an Eleanor nn Nelly - no child's ever gone down the nelly the elephant route with her (that I know of ) I think it's more likely adults would think of this. In fact, I know of at least two other children called Nell (rather than used as a nn), if that helps.

Needless to say, it's my fave on the list.

fadingfast · 20/01/2010 21:25

I have a Martha, but I love all your names!!
Not so keen on Francesca (for the Frankie reason). Alexandra might be a bit of a mouthful with an 'R' surname. I toyed with Juliet for a while - love Juliet but not Julie/Jules.

For me it would be between Alice and Eleanor.
