Gregory, Louis, Arthur or Edward?

None of which DH likes but since he has offered a grand total of zero useful suggestions so far...

I'm particularly interested to hear what you have to say about Gregory as have not found it mentioned here.

Thanks

Oh Gregory was top of my list! But DH wouldn't let me have it. We settled on Edward but then didn't use it as it didn't suit him.

grammar · 13/01/2010 14:12

I used Angus as a first name Gregory as his second and we added Guy as another second name when he was 7! We have a scottish surname of 3 syllables so there is a fluency and lyricism to the whole lot. I urge you to try out all the names together to hear they sound. If you like celtic names there is an exhaustive list on line . Google celtic names

Snowtiger · 13/01/2010 14:14

My DS1 is Arthur, and am devastated to see it being described as 'try-hard trendy'. Dammit. I chose it because it's an old family name amongst my lot and it was sufficiently unusual at the time that I didn't think it would be a popular one (hate popular names, can't bear the thought of my son being one of 4 kids in the same class with the same name). If it ends up being another Alfie / Archie / Noah / Jack I'll have to re-name the poor little soul. Gaaah!

Anyhooo, obviously I love Arthur the best of your options but also Louis. Gregory just reminds me of John Gordon Sinclair in Gregory's Girl, bit too ginger and geeky for me!

piscesmoon · 13/01/2010 14:30

Edward

HarriedWithChildren · 13/01/2010 14:47

Snow, there is a probabilty of mild red-headedness and I'd say a total certainty of geekiness so maybe Gregory it should be!

Gregory is at top of my list for any future boys. I have an Edmund as Edward too popular

smother · 13/01/2010 15:14

I am genuinely surprised that Gregory has received such positive feedback. It's not to my taste at all, but that's of no significance really!

Edward = boring.

Louis - wonderful name!

Arthur - sweet but a bit ploddy.

DownyEmerald · 13/01/2010 15:17

Gregory def
Gregory Peck - lovely

MaryMungo · 13/01/2010 15:33

I love Diggory! Could it be on the horizon?Never even put it on a possibles list cause I like names like Dorcas too, so don't trust my own taste

HarriedWithChildren · 13/01/2010 15:51

Edmund is a family name on both sides so would be great but somehow I just don't like it as much as Edward.

Gregory Peck, and I'm not given to gushing over men, is the handsomest actor there ever was.

Cece, what do you call your Edward?

Ooo - Gregory - I really like that. We have a Rufus and a Theo(dore) already and we are really struggling with naming DC4, due in April.....

DH loves Louis, but there are lots around here, so we have passed on that.

Edward - I really like this, but I don't really like the diminutives.

Arthur - I've never been really keen on this tbh.

mathanxiety · 13/01/2010 17:35

Louis or Edward -- love Edmund though.

loobylu3 · 13/01/2010 20:19

Rufus is fab! he could be a bit of a ruffian but a very lovable one

JaneiteIsAWimpyTeacher · 13/01/2010 20:21

I love Gregory and Edward.

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/01/2010 22:50

Can't believe that no-one has mentioned Gregory House!

It's a great name, and one of the few that dh and I agree on for our shortlist.

Much less keen on your other suggestions.
Please don't add Rufus to your list. It's a name that should be reserved for dogs only.

Clary · 13/01/2010 23:01

I know a small Gregory, it's a bit whacky but certainly memorable.

He is a lovely child FWIW. It's a bit of a name to carry IMO. Edward is lovely but more popular here (I know 4 under 10), Louis I am not a big fan of, agree spelling may be tricky, Arthur I luuurve and also only know 2 of primary age or under so not that try-hard trendy, at least in my neck of the middle-class woods.

Oooh read later post, I really liked Cedric but DH totally vetoed it. I also like Eric (no-one else ever does). Also Cecil.

HTH. Suspect not.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 14/01/2010 12:39

I love, love, love Gregory House. I have just downloaded the 6th series! I'm wondering if there might be a slight knock on effect from house, giving the name Gregory a slight temporary revival. I don't think it's going to rise up the charts but 5 years ago there might have been zero gregorys born in one year and now there might be about 15.

Clary, Cecil for a boy is just cruel. Eric I could warm to!

butadream · 14/01/2010 12:53

I like Eric!

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/01/2010 13:12

MMS - there were actually 79 Gregorys in 2006, 66 in 2007 and 59 in 2008 .

cece · 14/01/2010 13:14

We went for Tom in the end! Edward didn't suit him...

cece · 14/01/2010 13:15

sorry but if we had used Edward I wanted to shorten it to Ed or maybe Eddie.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 14/01/2010 13:39

oh well bang goes that theory. hugh laurie is putting people off the name then!

only glossy baby faced hollyoaks/neighbors characters have the power to raise a name's ranking!

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/01/2010 13:46

I don't know what the numbers were like before that, so it might be that he raised it, and it's now settling down again! Still, I'm glad - I don't want to pick a name that might suddenly soar up the charts!

mumtoted · 14/01/2010 13:50

I like Edward but then I'm biased

HarriedWithChildren · 14/01/2010 20:10

Hmmm, no closer to picking one than I was before but will use your fantastic comments to influence when the time comes. I can't even proceed by elimination as still like'em all.

This tiresome habit of nicknaming/abbreviating can turn a name you love into one you can't bear.
