Am I insane to quite like...

Serenity?

I think it's pretty. It's my favorite word as well . The only issue is, while I think of it as being a virtue name like Faith, Constance, etc, it comes off more as one of those names like Destiny or something, doesn't it? Pity.

BTW I wouldn't use this for a first name, I'm trying to convince DH it'd be a lovely middle name for our someday daughter.

You are not insane at all: it is a brilliant name.

notanumber · 11/01/2010 16:36

Yes, it's pretty and has a lovely meaning. 'S a bit hippy-dippy though.

But nowt wrong with that if you're a bit tie-dye yourself.

Actually though, now I come to think of it, middle names have got more room for being slightly mental alternative, so it'd be fine even if you're a Surrey stockbroker.

Caroline Jane Serenity Porter-Smith. Lovely.

randomimposter · 11/01/2010 16:37

it's lovely
I really like(d) Mercy, damn Madonna....
and also am keen on Clemency

Hope is nice too.

Not wild on Faith or Constance.

CheerfulYank · 11/01/2010 16:37

Thanks, mama. We really like Eleanora for a first name (it was DH's grandmother and I think Elle is a nice nn.) He thinks Eleanora Serenity is a little too...something. Haven't quite gotten a straight answer out of him as to what that something is, though!

It's lovely.

I like names with a virtuous meaning. My midwife with DS2 was Mercy - seemed apt somehow ...

What about Serena ? I like this for a first name.

But absolutely, go with Serenity

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/01/2010 16:39

X- posted.

I really like Elle. My DS is Evan though :

Evan and Elle .....

CheerfulYank · 11/01/2010 16:40

Thanks everyone else too, I just crossposted there I am a bit hippy, number, so it'll all work out.

And I really would like to use Serenity or Serena for a first name, but DS is Sam. And while I know names don't have to "go together" really, Sam and Serenity seem to stretch it a bit don't they?

OP posts:
Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/01/2010 16:45

yes, a bit !

notanumber · 11/01/2010 16:45

I do see your DH's point about the Eleanora Serenity combo, actually.

I think Eleanora is beautiful (and nice familiy connections) but it is a very very girly dainty name. In combination with another name that's even more so, it does rather overdo it imo.

Eleanor Serenity would work better in terms of not tipping the balance too far into the realms of patchouli oil and whale music. Though I do think Eleanora is the prettier name.

How about Eleanora Mavis?

notanumber · 11/01/2010 16:49

As for the alliteration thing, what order do you usually put yourselves in (in Christmas cards etc)? Are you Sam and Jo*, or Jo and Sam?

Because Sam, Jo and Serenity works fine. Jo, Sam and Serenity less so.

*am assuming that you are not also an S name. If I am wrong about this, then no. You can't have Serenity under any circumstances.

CheerfulYank · 11/01/2010 16:58

My name's Megan, so no, not an "S".

The thing about the "girly" name thing is that our last name is Brick. (I've posted that before, which I know is odd, but being across the pond from most of you I think I'm safe from any stalkers that may come our way. ) I think because our last name is so "solid" I tend to look for more "floaty" girl names or something. I have considered Eleanor before, but I really do like the "a". I just really love Serenity, as I said it's my fave word and something I strive for, although with a 2yr old boy I don't get there often! And, um...I really like Joss Whedon's series Firefly, um, in which (whispers) the spaceship was named Serenity. (runs away and hides nerdy face in shame emoticon)

Hello, My name is Serenity Brick.

Sorry I would snigger!

CheerfulYank · 11/01/2010 17:06

Right, so will not go with it for a first name. Any color/thing names are out once you have a noun for a last name. But I think Eleanora Serenity Brick, called Elle, is just...pretty, I suppose. Am I unhinged? Am I guaranteeing myself a lifetime of paying for the poor dear's therapy?

OP posts:
notanumber · 11/01/2010 17:06

I have to say that Serenity Brick isn't working for me. It sounds a bit like some scented bit of clay you'd buy at the New Age shop to relieve stress. Sorry.

Eleanora Brick is nice though.

How about Seren instead of Serenity? It means 'star' I think. Eleanora Seren Brick.

CheerfulYank · 11/01/2010 17:08

I will probably go with Eleanora Josephine, which DH and I have agreed on. But, a small part of me is pulling for Eleanora Serenity. Of course am not preg so at this point it's a nonissue.

OP posts:
CheerfulYank · 11/01/2010 17:10

PMSL number! You're so right! "Hello, I'm Spirit. Welcome to my shop, may I help you? Oh you're stressed. Well of course we have some very soothing candles...or you could try our new Serenity Brick, which is scented with lavendar and...oh you'll take it. Thank you. Namaste."

Well piss, that's definitely out eh?

Serenity is the name of incontinence underwear by Tena. Look at the picture on the top right.

Prefer Serena.

CheerfulYank · 11/01/2010 17:16

You just had to go and tell me that, didn't you math?!

OP posts:
notanumber · 11/01/2010 17:22

Eleanora Josephine is lovely.

Why didn't you tell us that was in the running in the first place, you fool?

Yes, Eleanora Josephine Brick is very pretty and all the names 'work' together.

Right then. You'd best get shagging hadn't you, unless you want little EJB to remain a hypothetical forever.

mathanxiety · 11/01/2010 17:37

I consider it my public duty .

I knew a family named Brick, from Kerry (in Ireland). I think Eleanora Josephine would be lovely -- one of the grandmother's names in the family I knew was Nora (from Honora), and one of the younger generation was called Honor; I thought it went well with the surname, and Eleanora has the same ring to it, imo.

Caoimhe · 11/01/2010 17:44

Eleanora Josephine is a fab name.

boodleboot · 11/01/2010 18:03

Serenity is NOT a nice name at all.....and i usually like all manner of weird names....

Eleanora is gorgeous tho....as is Leonora....

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/01/2010 18:56

Eleanora Josephine Brick

Roald Dahl would love it (that's good, BTW)

MrsMattie · 11/01/2010 18:59

It's a lovely word, but I always think you have to very careful with those virtue names. What if she is a crazy, loud personality? Bit like a promiscuous Chastity or a clumsy lump of a Grace. Just really wrong.
