What do you think of Hansie?

I've always really liked the name Hansie.

Do you think it's ok for an English boy - no Scandinavian or Dutch links etc.

Also I'm not keen on nicknames as official names, would you put Johan or Johannes on the birth cert. even though I don't love either of them?

Never heard of it before.

How do you pronounce it? DOn't like the sound of it tbh. Might be rhymed with pansy by teasing kids?

belgo · 05/01/2010 19:20

Hans is fine for a boy, but not Hansie! It's far too much like Pansie/hankie.

nickytwotimes · 05/01/2010 19:21

Ah, yes, Hans is good.

belgo · 05/01/2010 19:21

interesting x-post re. pansy!

JaneiteIsAWimpyTeacher · 05/01/2010 19:21

A no from me, sorry. I like Jan though.

skidoodle · 05/01/2010 19:21

not nice

LowLevelWhingeing · 05/01/2010 19:22

Hansie sounds a bit effeminate to me and IMHO suited to a family with some cultural links to the language of origin given that it is very German-sounding.

overmydeadbody · 05/01/2010 19:23

Hansie the pansie?

That's just mean

PacificDogwood · 05/01/2010 19:25

Hansie is totally and utterly very popular German name for.... Budgies! So if you are expecting a bird, go for it - a boy, noooooo!

How about the Welsh "Ioan"? Pronounced yo-hann.

KeyOui · 05/01/2010 19:30

It does rhyme with pansey - hadn't thought of that - duh I know

Ok and he could never be taken seriously in Germany...

I'm not from the UK, I hadn't thought of it as unheard of over here. Don't you all remember Hansie Cronje

Handsy - means a bloke who's free with the groping. Not good.

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 05/01/2010 19:39

I thought Hansie Cronje, the South African cricketer who was shamed, and has since died (relatively young I think).

Seems a strange name to pick if you have no family/cultural reasons for picking it?

hippipotamiHasLost77lbs · 05/01/2010 19:41

I like Hans (but am Dutch and it is my dad's name) but am not sure about Hansie. It sounds very effiminate and I think the poor child would get teased. Sorry.

AnnieLobeseder · 05/01/2010 19:44

For me it's a very South African name, and an Afrikaans rather than English-speaking one. Not sure you'd be doing your son any favours giving him a name like that if you're not culturally connected to the name.

I had a friend at school whose parents, recently arrived from England when he was born, named him Sarel - a very Afrikaans name, so that he would 'fit in with the local children'. But since he always lived in Enlish-speaking areas, he was teased endlessly.

He now calls himself Max.

SnowMuchToBits · 05/01/2010 19:49

Well my first thought was "like Hansie Cronje, former South African cricketer" and thought you maybe had South African links (or maybe German/Dutch). Hansie Cronje was Hansie short for Johannes by the way.

I think in this country it could be considered a bit effeminate, or at the least unusual. What other boys' names do you like?

KeyOui · 05/01/2010 20:13

I did first hear the name in South Africa when I lived there, I think you lose perspective of a name when you know a few blockey men called Hansie - I never saw it as effeminate.

I quite like Tristan & Keir too. Can see from the feedback that Hansie probably doesn't work in the UK too well.

SnowMuchToBits · 05/01/2010 20:18

I can see that in SA Hansie would def not be considered effeminate. Out of your other two suggestions, I think Keir would be less "poncey" and a bit more masculine than Tristan.

4andnotout · 05/01/2010 20:25

As soon as I read it I just though "Hansie's attatched to your armies" has loads of cruel nickname potential.

belgo · 06/01/2010 09:02

Why not go for Hans? That is a well known name in english speaking countries.

Or Johan or Jonas.

LynetteScavo · 06/01/2010 09:03

Anything ending is "ie" sounds like a girls name.

SerenityNowAKABleh · 06/01/2010 09:06

Yeah, to me it sounds SAn Afrikaans, but in SA it would be pronounced "hun-sie" rather than "han-sie".

Lionstar · 06/01/2010 09:12

Ooh, Keir is lovely go with that. Was on my list but DP didn't like it.

FoxyRevenger · 06/01/2010 12:47

It sounds a bit like a hand-warming device.

Try our new Hansies!!

Sorry....

LynetteScavo · 06/01/2010 18:03

LOl @ handwarming device...I can see it on Dragons den now....

KeyOui · 06/01/2010 19:36

I might go for Johann instead - what do you think the chances are of a lot of people pronouncing it Joanne though?

Or is Johann well enough known for that not to be a worry.

Thanks for the feedback btw, very helpful
