PILs laughed at our idea for soon-to-be DS

One of the only names DH and I agree on is Magnus. However when we told PILs that this was our top name choice, they laughed.
Thoughts??

Hmm, not sure. It is quite posh. How about Marcus?

My thought is - never ever tell anyone else your ideas for your baby's name before they arrive.

Also, if you both love it, go for it.

Argh - I think we're going to use it too - we've just had a mammoth convo about whether Magnus and Rufus (DS2) work together and decided that we love the name Magnus so will probably go with it.

But after three DCs, I have learnt never to tell parents or PIL your choices - they never like them. confront them with a fait accompli and then they can't do/say anything . Stick to your guns -it's a FAB name.

Magnus is a brilliant name. Take no notice of those rude people. Really - fancy actually laughing outright at your son and daughter-in-law's choice of name. If that was me, it would make me more determined to use the name, just to teach them a bloody lesson.

I like it, suggested it to dp for our ds.

Dp was totally put off Stanley and Barnaby by the reactions of others, inc. mil though tbh I', happier with what we chose in the end.

Don't tell anyone until the baby is hear unless you really care what others think!

I have a very unusual name and it's been a complete curse. Don't do it. I deal with the negatives of havign an unusual name every week of my life still and I'm nearly 40. I wouldnt inflict on anyone.

Probably had visions of Magnus Magnuson with a dummy in his mouth! Sorry, not laughing, but that is the only Magnus I can think of.

Oh yes I agree about not telling anyone your choices. MIL asked me about names the other day and I said we liked Oliver, the baby won't be called Oliver we have already decided on Rory but don't want to tell anyone until he is here. Mil said "Oh no you can't have Oliver, I don't like it at all and a work colleague called her baby Oliver the other day so you can't go for Oliver" How can anyone be offended by Oliver? It is one of the most inoffensive names around.

Magnus isn't a 'very unusual' name, though.

I quite like Magnus. It does make me think of Vikings, even though it's Latin. It must be the Magnusson effect.

Magnus is a great name.

You have learnt the lesson of not telling people a name before it is really a person's name. They don't tend to laugh if it's a done deal.

Magnus is great and not uncommon here (Scotland). Don't really get the less posh than Marcus thought - here Marcus would be v v posh. Just don't tell anyone your baby name thoughts until the deed is done and it's too late.

Yes, I think of Marcus as more "posh" than Magnus. I have Orcadian family connections but that's not why I like the name, I just like it.

I have learned my lesson and will be keeping schtumm from now on till baby arrives and we give him his name.

Its a good strong name. PIL is presumably of the generation who saw a lot of Mastermind, but even if you do get that association I'd say it was a positive one - Mr Magnusson always seemed a thoroughly decent chap.
