Have loved these 3 names since 2005 when DS1 was born, couldn't use them for DS2 or DS3 but am going to need to use them in April apparently so here they are:

Eleanor Rose

Lydia Rose

followed by a 2 syllable surname.

Thought I had settled on Elle as the first name but hav mentioned it to a few people and no-one gets it until I say 'You know, like Elle McPherson' or whatever her name is and I don't want the child or myself to be saying that forever.

Thought if we name her Eleanor (which I love) we can just call her Elle.

Love Lydia too.

I found a website the other day which also listed all the associated nick-names but even after searching history can't find it.

It suggested things like 'Know it all' for Noah and 'Toblerone' for Toby etc etc.

Can anyone think of any similar nick-names for these names either from experience or because they have children with these names?

Thanks.

Meant to say 'either from experience or because they know the site I am on about?'

Hmm Nellie or Lydia...not too keen on either tbh. I do recall someone getting called Lydia teapot, Lydia dustbin etc. So might be tempted with Elenor, as long as you make sure Nellie isn't a nickname.

BitOfFun · 03/01/2010 00:19

My nickname is Nell- never been an issue. I love Lydia though.

purpleduck · 03/01/2010 00:19

I prefer Elle/Eleanor

I don't know who you are hanging out with that doesn't recognise "Elle" as a name

I think it will be fine

LadyOfTheFlowers · 03/01/2010 00:19

Ha yes Boris! Think I vaguely remember the Lid ones coming up actually!

Okay - if enough people can agree Elle is indeed fine, will probo go with original plan!

I also like Nell as a name on it's own.

Am getting more kerfuffled now! If we call her Elle she will be just Elle, if we call her Elanor she could be Elle or Nell.... Argh!

I would go for Eleanor

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 03/01/2010 00:31

Elle or Eleanor are both lovely but prefer Eleanor out of the two.
I love the name Eleni too.

ScottishBoris · 03/01/2010 00:33

If pushed I would go for Elle on its onsome

disclaimer - SB has weird taste in girl's names as proven by dd1 and dd2

dizzycringles · 03/01/2010 00:41

ladyofflowers congratulations she will be spoilt rotten having 3 big ds' AND lordy help all future suitors!!!

both of your choices are lovely and I cannot think of any pitfalls nn wise - why not wait and see which one suits her?

BitOfFun · 03/01/2010 00:44

I feel all fuzzy now being a Nell

LadyOfTheFlowers · 03/01/2010 00:45

Think Nell is lush so am going with Eleanor because I am greedy then I can call her both!

OP posts:
dizzycringles · 03/01/2010 00:50

just right, they're both lovely

lilolilmanchester · 03/01/2010 01:01

Just remember, as she gets older (and am talking 9 -10/younger rather than grown up) you will lose control of which shortened name is used... my mum hates the shortened version of both my and my brother's names... but she is the only person calling us by our original names. Both your names are lovely, but don't assume your chosen shortened versions will be the ones used in years to come

StanleyFletcher · 03/01/2010 02:06

If she grew up to be Prime Minister would you prefer her to be PM Elle whatever-whatever or PM Eleanor whatever-whatever?

muggglewump · 03/01/2010 02:25

My Dad always says- Lydia teapot.
And Ellie is fine, if you want an Ellie B (or blonde Ellie, thin Ellie, Ellie with glasses etc.

You could be different and go for Elle.
Really different from Ellie!
Give her Mae as a middle name!

Not a bad name, but will be one of 4 in the class and may have not great connotations.

Shame really, but Ellie/Ellie Mae isn't a good name these days.

ChippingIn · 03/01/2010 03:14

I think Eleanor and call her Elle. I like longer/more formal names as an option, as I think in certain professions they are taken more seriously and if she never needs it, there's no harm done.

bellissima · 03/01/2010 08:31

'Eleanor Rose' would certainly show your Democrat credentials. She was the wife of FDR and v famous in the States - believe has a rose named after her. I wouldn't personally use that combo without being aware of that.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 03/01/2010 10:21

Haven't a clue what you are on about Bell but it doesn't sound too good.

OP posts:
LadyOfTheFlowers · 03/01/2010 10:23

Do you all think if we call her Elle that would be it - just Elle - or some people might call her Ellie anyway because I don't want an Ellie for the reasons below.

If we call her Eleanor she is most likely to be called Ellie by others isn't she?

I realise when she is older herself and others will call her her whatever, not neccessarily Elle or Nell.

MamaLazarou · 03/01/2010 10:25

The only downfall I can think of is that every other child is called Ellie these days.

Apart from that, they are both lovely names.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 03/01/2010 10:26

Oh buggeration.

I thought I had it sorted now I'm all up in the air again.
