Have loved these 3 names since 2005 when DS1 was born, couldn't use them for DS2 or DS3 but am going to need to use them in April apparently so here they are:

Eleanor Rose

Lydia Rose

followed by a 2 syllable surname.

Thought I had settled on Elle as the first name but hav mentioned it to a few people and no-one gets it until I say 'You know, like Elle McPherson' or whatever her name is and I don't want the child or myself to be saying that forever.

Thought if we name her Eleanor (which I love) we can just call her Elle.

Love Lydia too.

I found a website the other day which also listed all the associated nick-names but even after searching history can't find it.

It suggested things like 'Know it all' for Noah and 'Toblerone' for Toby etc etc.

Can anyone think of any similar nick-names for these names either from experience or because they have children with these names?

Thanks.

fanjolina tis why DH wouldn't even let me consider it

CaptainNancy · 03/01/2010 19:05

I love Eleanor... no need to shorten it, though depending on the local accent, some people might think her name was Helena

LadyOfTheFlowers · 03/01/2010 19:23

Ok....

Am still not sure, esp. now the Chlamydia thing has come up.

Hit me with some other names that will go with Rose and a 2 syllable 'S' surname.

im thinking summer rose if this baby turn out to be a girl

dizzydixies · 03/01/2010 19:37

we have an Isabella Rose but then if you ask the consensus on here so does everyone else if that bothers you

Saskia Rose
Seren Rose - I quite like illiteration
Bethany Rose
Emily Rose
Cordelia Rose
Penelope Rose
Amelia Rose
Jessica Rose
Imogen Rose
Alexia Rose
Cecily Rose

keepingeverythingcrossed · 03/01/2010 19:42

If you call her Eleanor, you can call her Leni for a nickname. Massively biased about this though as I have the most gorgeous neice called this and would have loved it as a name for my own

LadyOfTheFlowers · 03/01/2010 20:23

How do we feel about Verity Rose?

Verity was on the list too.

You see the thing is, my 3 boys have names that can't really be changed to anything else. Little petnames have arisen from them but not other names in their own right iyswim?
Like Eleanor becoming Ellie - which is a very popular name.

From what I can gather Verity becomes 'V' or 'Veri' which are just short bits of it.

Probo sound like a muppet but I want my children to be called what DH and I have chosen. They all have middle names so if they don't like their first when they are older they can use those hopefully, but while they are my little children I want them to have the names I chose!

DS1s first name is quite unusual so he has a more 'normal' middle name, DS2 has a bible name so has a very normal middle one, just in case and DS3s are both quite normal.

Meant to add, thanks for the suggestions.

Saskia Rose
Seren Rose - The S names don't seem to go with the surname.

Bethany Rose - DH knew a Beth who was 'slutty'

Emily Rose - Very popular here

Cordelia Rose
Penelope Rose - Both a bit too posh for me!

Amelia Rose - Meh

Jessica Rose - My name!

Imogen Rose - DH like this but think is becoming quite popular - what are the nicknames/shorts?

Alexia Rose - Don't like

Cecily Rose - Again, sounds a bit posh for me!

Well I'm an Olivia and I've had the Lydia the Tattooed Lady song sung at me before. Nobody's ever come up with chlamydia joke mind.

I am prescribing the name Heidi to all and sundry tonight, how about that one? Can't think how you could shorten that.

GladioliBuckets · 03/01/2010 21:05

Lydia song

bluebump · 03/01/2010 21:11

I have a sister called Eleanor (pronounced ella nor rather than elena) and she has pretty much always been known as Ella. I like Elle as a first name though too.

DitaVonCheese · 03/01/2010 21:23

maryz I agree with your wise DD!

OP, Verity is also very nice. Can you wait and see which she looks like when she arrives?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 03/01/2010 21:33

I could wait I guess yes, but am afraid DH or myself will go 'Oh let's call her this...' when she remains un-named.

I have been thinking more about Lydia and how I was called 'Stressy Jessy' at school or just 'Stress' or 'Stressica' and I found that quite upsetting at times, would have been mortified if they had been able to come up with an STD.

But, I know, every name will have something stupid made out of it...

DH quite likes Florence - Is that asking for trouble?!

OP posts:
GladioliBuckets · 03/01/2010 21:43

There'll be more Florences about her age thanks to Florence and The Machine so she won't suffer alone if anyone does come up with something.

dizzydixies · 03/01/2010 23:00

I love Florence and the Machine

whilst I like florence I don't like Flo

we have a cordelia and we are anything but posh and I love Penelope nn Penny if that makes it less posh for you?!?

Imogen could be Immie or Mimi?

infact we gave all 3 DDs 'posh' names with shortened everyday versions so that when they're down the park smoking and drinking merry down we can march down there, shout their posh names and demand that they get in the house

lovely example of parents aren't we

nooka · 03/01/2010 23:13

It's perfectly possible to only use a particular form of a name if you want. I know lots of people (including me) with long formal names that have many shortenings (like Elisabeth) that are only ever called that. Plus you can't guarantee that with a short name a nickname won't evolve. My grandmother tried that with Ian and Clare and ended up with Chip and Bee (my uncle was very very like his dad, and my mother became Clarabella/Bellabee/Bee).

Eleanor is lovely I think.

ellokitty · 04/01/2010 01:20

The only thing I would say is that when you choose a name, make sure you like all of the potential nicknames - because once the child gets to five or so, you do not control what they are called - they do! So if you hate Ellie for example, then I'd probably avoid Eleanor because there won't be a lot you can do if your precious Eleanor decides one day that she wants to be known as Ellie! Trust me, I am on both the giving and receiving end of that one! I have a nickname, that my mother hates - but tough I refuse to answer her if she uses my full name (I hate it, so she has no choice ), but also my DD is sometimes called by a nickname that I wouldn't choose myself, but do not hate. Again, I cannot control what other people call my children, not once the child is old enough to decide for themselves!

Tortington · 04/01/2010 01:25

the last poster made a v. good point and one i would second.

you do not make up the NN. their friends do.

i do know a lydia, who is called....lydia - there really isn't anything else to do with that name.

IMO if you want a child called elle. then just blummin call her elle.

CupOChristmasCheerfulYank · 04/01/2010 01:29

I love Elle! DH's grandmother was Eleanora and I am going to use it, w/Elle as a nickname, for our DD if we have one.

What are your other DD's names?

ChippingIn · 04/01/2010 08:16

I understand what you say about wanting to choose a name and have your child called that name, but IMO that will never happen, no matter what you call them! It will end up shortened or lengthened regardless!

My parents spent a considerable amount of my childhood correcting my friends over my name (they hated it being shortened), and they still do - regardless of the fact that a) I'm OLD & b) I don't mind my friends shortening my name!! Also, I never call my brother his full name, I always shorten it, EXCEPT when my parents are in earshot! LOL

LadyOfTheFlowers · 04/01/2010 08:30

Am probably going to go for Elle/Eleanor or Lydia in the end as these are my original favourites.

I have 3 boys called Shay, Noah and Toby.
Shay gets called Seamus if I am angry and he won't listen to me! Noah doesn't have a nn apat from cutesy ones like Noey and Toby is sometimes Tobe, but generally they are always called by their proper names, no-one apart from us calls them these other names.

The only reason I didn't want the name to turn into Ellie was because it is so popular but think this will be the most likely NN to arise once she is a bit older. I don't dislike it as such.

I like Elle and Nell. I have a niece and a friend, both called Eleanor, nicknamed Elle and Nell respectively.
