We have two names we can't decide between:

Martha
Stevie

Martha is obviously the more traditional name but we, esp DH, do love Stevie as well. My only worry is that Stevie might not be a good choice for a 'serious' job in the future, but DH has decided it's a rock star name so it doesn't matter!

Also, our surname starts with an ST, does that matter?

This list is at least better than our boys list which currently has no names on it!!

Really don't like Stevie as a first name, especially as your last name starts with ST.

If you really like it then maybe you could use it as a middle name?

LastOfTheMulledWine · 28/12/2009 15:09

I love them both but would choose Stevie as Martha is uber popular here.

SkyeOneDay · 28/12/2009 15:14

I wondered if Martha was starting to get really popular, we don't know any here yet but the popular ones seem to just explode!

I know Stevie is not going to be everyone's choice at all, but we do love it. Our surname has three syllables so it does sound a bit like a stage name though!!

A stage name or a defendant.

bellissima · 28/12/2009 15:16

Stephanie nn Stevie? (as in Ms Nicks)

MrsMattie · 28/12/2009 15:16

Stevie is adorable for a girl.

Martha - meh.

SkyeOneDay · 28/12/2009 15:23

Loving the defendant!

Yes like Stevie Nicks but really don't like Stephanie unfortunately (actually didn't know it comes from Stephanie)

Stevie is silly with an ST surname IMO.

SkyeOneDay · 28/12/2009 15:26

Yes it's more the surname than anything that bothers me, I realise it's an unusual name that won't be everyone's cup of tea!

Oh I like it with the st surname. Nice alliteration.

SkyeOneDay · 28/12/2009 15:58

Mixed bag then! I thought it might divide opinions...

If you like Stevie I would give her Stephanie, and then she has the choice. I prefer Martha.

SkyeOneDay · 28/12/2009 16:10

Stephanie really doesn't work with our surname (hard to explain without posting it), I think because they're both 3 syllables.

piscesmoon · 28/12/2009 16:13

The only problem with Stevie might be that people expect a boy.

SkyeOneDay · 28/12/2009 16:14

Really? Didn't know it was also used as a boy's name. (Obviously I know Steve/Steven etc is!)

OP posts:
piscesmoon · 28/12/2009 16:16

Short for Stephen/Steven. It is usually shortened to Steve, but often Stevie when young. I suppose it doesn't crop up a lot at Stephen isn't popular at the moment.

missismac · 28/12/2009 16:19

Love Stevie - esp with the ST surname. As someone else said - lovely alliteration, it will roll nicely off the tongue. give her a classic middle name (Martha?) that she can use if she doesn't want to be Stevie at some point in her life.

Shed loads of Martha's down here. Can take or leave it - nothing too special about it though.

Good luck with choosing.

SkyeOneDay · 28/12/2009 16:31

Bet you we have a boy after all this!

My dd2 is Martha so I obviously love it, not too happy about how popular it is becoming but I guess we have added to that so can't complain...

I do like Stevie but not sure I would actually use it. I also liked Jamie for a girl but I know male Jamie's so couldn't use it for that reason.

liliputlady · 28/12/2009 18:09

I MUCH prefer Martha.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 28/12/2009 19:11

I really like Stevie.

SkyeOneDay · 28/12/2009 19:37

Thanks for all your input!

WRT Stevie, is it too informal a name for an adult do you think? Even if you don't like it I'd be interested to know what people think on that one, as apart from the surname, that's my other main concern.

Still really like Martha but thinking it's going to get really popular soon.

OP posts:
Ineedsomesleep · 30/12/2009 08:53

I prefer more grown up names, ones that will last them throughout their life, but can be shortened if they choose.

So for me, yes, Stevie is too informal.

RollBaubleUnderTree · 30/12/2009 09:06

Funnily enough DD is a Martha and if DS1 was a girl he woulld have been Stevie.

I am glad we did not choose Stevie for DD though as it would not have suited her. I still like it but would have got very fed up with the comments about it being 'a boys name'. DS2 was a slightly girly name and the comments annd him being mistaken for a girl got old very very quickly.

sunshinejanuary · 30/12/2009 11:03

I suspect that if you call her Stevie, i think people will keep asking hwer what her full name is when she is an adult...
