We have two names we can't decide between:

Martha
Stevie

Martha is obviously the more traditional name but we, esp DH, do love Stevie as well. My only worry is that Stevie might not be a good choice for a 'serious' job in the future, but DH has decided it's a rock star name so it doesn't matter!

Also, our surname starts with an ST, does that matter?

This list is at least better than our boys list which currently has no names on it!!

Don't like Stevie at all, sorry. She'll get sick of hearing 'After Stevie Nicks?', and 'Is that short for Stephanie?'.

My sister named my niece Stephanie, with the intention that we would all call her Stevie. She's never been a Stevie, though: always a Steph!

I don't think you can necessarily control the nickname they'll end up with (which is probably why so many nicknames-as-names are popular these days: Alfie, Evie, Jack, etc).

Sorry but don't like Stevie at all, with a surmane that starts St, it conjures and image in my mind of a dodgy stage/film name.

Martha much nicer imo.

Stevie is lovely.

I much prefer it to Martha which I really dislike for reasons that I just can't explain.

What about Stefania nn Stevie?
or Martha with Stevie as middle name, then see which one suits her best?

I quite like Stevie but would definitely do Stephanie (which I like anyway). Stevie Smith was quite "formal", no? At least Glenda Jackson looked severe when playing her...
