Should i just not use this name?

Hi i have chosen not to consider the name Caiden due to MN, and have now fallen in love with the name Charlie, when i told DH he said it is the name of my MIL's brother who i have never met and MIL and her brother dont speak very much after a family argument.
Am i being selfish to still think of using the name as my dc and i will never meet her brother anyway.
My ds name is Archie, are the names nice together or too similar?

Charlie is a lovely name. If your dh is in agreement, then go for it.

Charlie sounds a bit like Archie the other way round, but not too obvious.

I love the name Charlie, much nicer than Caiden IMHO. But, if it's likely to cause upset in the family it's probably best to avoid it .

How about Stan (Stanley)?

That is what i was worried about, i want her to be happy too, i get on ok with her and Archie is her world. as im sure dc#2 would be.

Why not ask MIL how she feels about it, and tell her you are happy to not use the name if she feels awkward about it at all.

I do like the name Charles/Charlie - my godson has this name - and do prefer it to Caiden. It s rather imilar to Archie though.

Jacob - I like Jacob a lot, although less keen on nn Jake
Joshua - again like Joshua, Josh is OK but not a fave
Christian - not so keen
Jake - much prefer Jacob
Jack - I like this
Jasper - not keen
Harry - like this, also like Henry

Jacob and Christian are nice, as is Joshua, although I think that's a very popular one, which may or may not bother you.

Oh yes do ask MIL about using Charlie, you never know! I'm generally against telling anyone name you're considering using but in this case I'd definitely check.

From your list I like Harry and Jack, although IIRC Jack is very popular in the UK ATM. Is that right?

I know a lot of people feel you should always use a full name rather than a 'nickname', but I really don't agree. DS has a 'nickname' name and we use the full version as a nickname IYSWIM. I'm assuming Archie is just Archie rather than Archibald. How about:

If you are a close I wouldn't use it. There are names in my family's past that I wouldn't like to be reminded of, so I can understand why she wouldn't feel good about it.

Christian is lovely, the nick name Kit is fab.
Jake and Jack are so sweet.
Connor is a strong, masculine name.

If it was me i would ask MIL how she felt about it - it sounds like you get on well

If you like Caiden don't let mumsnet stop you using it.

I really like Caiden. Not so keen on Charlie, far far too popular (top 5 by now surely?) Also may be awkward for MIL.

Archie and Charlie don't - they are much too similar imo.

If you like Caiden, you should use it. You've got to love the name, not us.

And as others have said, please don't give up a name you love because of some random mumsnetters - you might not like their name choices either, thats ok!

If you like Caiden and your dh does, then go for it, you are hardly likely to run into any of us in the near future

Jacob/Jake is great.

I'd be careful with Connor. It's fine for this country but in France it sounds a bit too close to a swear word. Might not sound very relavant but it might be when he gets older and goes on holiday.
