Wolfgang for a boy or Ursula for a girl... any thoughts? My partner likes them, my sister likes them, my Dad hates them... what do you think?

Love them both

MaggieAnFiaRua · 17/12/2009 17:13

I quite like them! they sound like brother and sister. It sounds like names chosen by somebody sane and competent, but a lot more adventurous than the average person.

my mum talked me out of using phoebe for my dc1. still feel a bit pisssed off about that 7 years on.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/12/2009 17:18

I'm not at all keen on Wolfgang but Ursula is a good name - underused imo.

SmacOnTheLipsUnderTheMistletoe · 17/12/2009 17:20

I'm with your Dad. Both very harsh sounding names IMHO.

PoppyIsApain · 17/12/2009 17:22

I dislike them both tbh, but you should go with what you like not other people.

belgo · 17/12/2009 17:23

Go for it.

NativityApple · 17/12/2009 17:28

I have used one of these, much to the disgust of my IL's. Which made me like it even more.

MamaLazarou · 17/12/2009 17:31

They are both brilliant names. I love them both most heartily. Your dad will get used to them.

birdofthenorth · 17/12/2009 18:02

I quite like Wolfgang though there may be playground wolf howling to contend with!!

Ursula sounds harsh and witchy to me and reminds me of Phoebe's dizzy bitchy sister in Friends! Sorry x

MrsMattie · 17/12/2009 18:03

Wolfgang is awful. I like Ursula, though.

mmelindt · 17/12/2009 18:08

Both names are very typical names for 40something Germans so my view of them is a bit tinged by that. I know a few Wolfgangs, and DH's cousin is called Ursula. Other cousin is called Ines, if you like Germanic names.

Doesnt matter what your Dad thinks, if you like the name then go for it.

Buddleja · 17/12/2009 19:14

Initially I thought 'Ah no' then I thought maybe I'm thinking 'Ah no' only because they aren't popular/common names.

They are names I'd raise an eyebrow at once (due to the rarity of their use) and then get used to

LetThereBeRock · 17/12/2009 19:21

I hate Ursula but love Wolfgang.

sunshinejanuary · 17/12/2009 19:42

If you and your partner like them i would say go for it

Thissideofchannel · 17/12/2009 20:30

Wolfgang (Wolfie) and Ursula (Uschi) are VERY popular names for 40-60 year old Germans, very much like Rosemary and Harold in the UK. No German baby would be given those names currently - they really sound old fashioned (but not yet cool like Leopold or Maria which are making a big comeback for example).

So I really don't like them on a baby, but only because I know too many German aunts and uncles and friends with the names.

monkeyfacegrace · 17/12/2009 20:34

[vomit emoticon] Ursula should be kept exclusivally (sp?) for sea witches, and Wolfgang sounds too 'im trying to be cool-look at my sons whacky name'.
But...Im only one person, so go with what you like!

Thissideofchannel · 17/12/2009 22:41

There is nothing 'cool' or 'whacky' about Wolfgang, monkeyfacegrace, really! It is a very, very common name for 50 year old Germans - really nothing cool about it imo.

bigstripeytiger · 17/12/2009 22:44

I know someone called Wolfgang, people call him Wolf.

Lucyhugbox · 17/12/2009 23:03

I was going to ask are you German? I really like both names - especially Wolfgang - but they are the names of 40-something friends of mine, so they are not trendy names if that's important to you.

valbona · 18/12/2009 09:44

I adore, really adore both of them in theory ... but I have to admit they are on my list of fantasy names I wouldn't actually call my child (well not if DH has anything to do with it)

diddl · 18/12/2009 10:44

I hate them both.

BlauerWeihnachtsengel · 18/12/2009 10:57

Yup, when I think of Wolfgang I either think of an overweight, slightly arrogant German pen-pusher mid-50s type, or Mozart - didn't wifey call him Wolfie in the film or am I fantasising?

And Ursula is the same age but slightly neurotic, probably from being married too long to the aforementioned Wolfgang - the pen-pusher not the composer. Either that or she's a saint - don't you get schools called St. Ursula's?

BlauerWeihnachtsengel · 18/12/2009 10:59

Oops, thisside, hope I didn't offend you and your Wolfgang/Ursula-named aunts and uncles. I just happen to know an arrogant Wolfgang and a neurotic Ursula and was projecting.

Mistletoesnowman · 18/12/2009 11:52

I like Wolfgang but Ursula reminds me of the witch in The Little Mermaid I'm afraid.

spaghettina · 18/12/2009 11:54

Ursula is lovely, perhaps Wolfgang is a little "out there" unless you're German...
