Wolfgang for a boy or Ursula for a girl... any thoughts? My partner likes them, my sister likes them, my Dad hates them... what do you think?

i know a couple and thats nearly their names - thats the reason i clicked on the thread! like ursula - not a fan of wolfgang! what about wolfram instead - not as harsh!

goingforitagain · 18/12/2009 12:07

Awful! sorry

indieangel · 18/12/2009 12:10

Love them. Ursula is the name of my cat, Sula for short and I wish we'd used it for one of our children now.

HerbalHolly · 18/12/2009 12:36

WOW! I had no idea there'd be so many replies!
Thank you all for your input.

MaggieAnFiaRua - 'chosen by someone sane and competent' I'm very happy with that.
LucyHugBox - I'm not German no but I do have a thig for old European names. I didn't know that Ursula and Wolfgang were outdated maybe this is the begining of the come back!

My partner calls me 'Bear' and he has taken to calling our babe-to-be 'Little Bear' and Ursula means bear so that's where that comes from. As for Wolfgang - we both like wolves, Mozart and Goethe. It think it sounds like a pretty study name. The surname is short, very common and very British so I think it should work ok - and not be too complicated.

They are both coming back - I know a couple of baby Wolves,(but no Wolfgangs) and I've seen Ursula mentioned a few times on Mumsnet.

If you like animal names I know a Leon and Lupé brother and sister.

FoxyRevenger · 18/12/2009 13:35

Sorry, I think they are both fairly awful but especially Wolfgang. I don't know if I would saddle a child with such a name. It does sound a 'wee' bit like you've tried so hard to be wacky that it just comes off a little odd.

HerbalHolly · 18/12/2009 14:04

Amazing! They seem to be like marmite in that people have quite certain strong reactions to them.

Interesting words being used to describe your reactions ranging from fantasy, saddle a child, adore, wacky, very very normal. Who'd have thought it!

Belgo - Leon is a great idea esp. as the babe is likely to be a leo. Lupé sounds nice but for me a bit too complcated to explain to someone hearing it for the first time, perhaps.

I think of the names Ursula and Wolfgang as being old, traditional and sturdy but not boring.

Canella - Wolfram is a nice alternative. You're right it's less harsh. I'll def see what DP says about that one.

Wulfric is another name I like.

HerbalHolly · 18/12/2009 14:08

Hey that's good too!

My eldest has Wolfgang as a middle name, he got called Wolfie for a while.
I love it as it's strong, unusual and quite funny.

Paolosgirl · 18/12/2009 14:12

I know a couple of (young) Ursulas, so it doesn't seem too off-beat - quite like it in fact.

Wolfgang on the other hand conjures up pictures of overweight, middle-aged German men, will have the other children howling at him in the playground, and makes you sound as if you are Trying Too Hard to be different. Can you tell I really don't like it?!

EdgarAleNPie · 18/12/2009 14:14

ursula = she bear - good name for little girl? don't think so

Wolfgang - not a goer for me,

mathanxiety · 19/12/2009 23:12

Like them both. I know a younger German named Wolfgang (30s) and a 9 y.o. Ursula (her brother is Christian), plus another Ursula who is probably late 20s, a teacher of one of the DCs. They're both stylish names -- I don't think there's anything tth about them.

Wolfgang sounds a bit ferral to me. I think Ursula is a lovely name

rimmer08 · 20/12/2009 19:21

both awful, sorry

GrimmaTheNome · 20/12/2009 19:29

If your're nicknamed 'Bear' then Ursula Minor is great!

Not sure about Wolfgang though.

boodleboot · 21/12/2009 14:32

fan-tabby-dozie

you simply must use them.

meggymegmegs · 21/12/2009 15:44

I must admit, I immediately thought of a German man and Polish lady I know when I read them, but with a bit of thought I think they're really nice.

jeanjeannie · 21/12/2009 15:46

Adore/love Ursula - was in my top 5 list, just didn't go with our last name.

Not sure about Wolfgang - sorry.

GossipMonger · 21/12/2009 15:47

I dislike both.

Wolfgang! Poor boy.

Ursula is the name of the seawitch in the little mermaid. Ugly character.

Really really NO!

lovechoc · 21/12/2009 15:52

Not my cup of tea, but it's not my choice so you have to please yourself not other people.

pinkpip100 · 21/12/2009 20:07

well I think Ursula is very good choice ... (nothing to so with the fact its my name, honest ). And I'm not German or Polish, or in the 40-60 age bracket.

I think I prefer Wolfram to Wolfgang.

(I'm off to worry that when people hear my name all they think of is that horrid witch from the little mermaid!)
