girls names not ending in ee or ah

GibberingGinger · 11/12/2009 15:49

My DH has a thing about all girls names ending in the sounds ee or ah (Millie, Lucy, Amy, Sarah, Emma etc) and for some reason wants to avoid it.

It's really difficult to come up with names that we like, but fit his silly rule. They all sound really 1970's (Lynn, Susan) or really 1950's (Beryl, Agnes)

The only ones I like are Ruth and Claire however neither of these work with our surname Roth. (Ruth Roth??? Claire Roth/Clear Off???)

Help please......

Gibbering I really like Annabel too but know a few that have been born in the last couple of months.

My DH is good at coming up with silly rules and then having no suggestions himself.

Tell him the only name you like that fits in with his silly rule is Olwyn (sorry to any Olwyns out there). Hopefully, he will see sense.

On the other hand, he does have a bit of a point, it does stop you both choosing standard issue names like Ruby, Evie, Eva and Ava.

I actually agree with your DH on half his rule - I don't like ee endings for girls either, they sound too girly to me. I think it's because of associations with "weak endings" in the grammatical sense, and because we use -ie as a diminutive ending (lassie, doggie etc.), it makes those words sound diminutive too IMO.
Does he mind other vowel endings (um, Juno?) or is it consonant all the way?

Returning briefly to this thread to suggest

Frances

which I'd have chosen if it didn't clash with our surname

Frances and Madeleine
Frances and Imogen
Frances and Isobel
Frances and Helen...

See, you can't go wrong!

BeckyBen · 20/12/2010 16:13

How strange. A year later, my DH has made the same stipulation. We're down to:

Jocelyn
Evelyn
Gwen
Alice
Madeleine
Gretchen
Beatrice
Edith
Ruth
Judith

Nightstar · 20/12/2010 16:19

I like Morgan with your surname.

And Madeleine

Or Coral or Faith perhas, but two sylables is better

KenDoddsDadsDogEatsTinsel · 20/12/2010 19:12

Colette
Carmel
Kathleen

twinkletoesxmas · 20/12/2010 19:30

i think a long name like elizabeth or seraphine or catherine goes well with roth

twinkletoesxmas · 20/12/2010 19:30

charlotte or maybe lucia or sophie

dizzy77 · 21/12/2010 19:45

Ginger, thanks for starting this thread: I know where your DH is coming from - I find "ee" sounds can sometimes be a bit diminutive (let dd/ds choose them, for an nn, if they want it, but let's assume this person will grow into an adult) and our surname ends with an "ah" sound so would prefer not to saddle the poor soul with two of those in a row.

That said at 19 weeks we've not even started talking about names yet (saving that post sexing scan so we only need have half the conversations) so let's see where our short lists end up. Notable female scientists, anyone?
