Love this name for a boy but worried people will assume he's a girl when abbreviated to Cass. Also, how would you pronounce Cassius -as it looks or Cash-us??

Pronounce as it looks in my book.

I think Cass can be masculine as well as femine... just don't abbreviate to Cassie for a boy!!!

Nice name imho.

RnB · 11/12/2009 16:56

lovely name. I have a male friend called Cass. Go for it!

MamaLazarou · 11/12/2009 17:27

I would pronounce it as Cassy-uss.

It is a brilliant name.

Cass is fine as a nickname.

bellissima · 11/12/2009 17:31

Cassy-uss. as in Clay

I just knew Lockets would be on here

I am currently pregnant with DC2, if a boy he was going to be called Cassius. I am expecting a girl! When we found out we were both momentarily disappointed as we both adore the name Cassius, but know now that we will never get to use it. We do have a lovely girls' name lined up though

David Hare, the new heavy weight world champion apparently has an 18 month old boy called Cassius.

...well, DD1 is India, and we are 90% there with Jasmine for DD2. Just think India and Jasmine go beautifully together and Jaz(zie) makes a fab nickname.

LetThemEatCake · 11/12/2009 23:35

I have a Cassian. No one calls him Cass, nor Cassie.

I'd be alright with Cass though - that was the name of the Big Kahuna in Gidget. The top man, the best surfer, the beach bum

in all, a cool name/ abbrev

dizzycringles · 11/12/2009 23:38

I LOVE it, was going to call DD3 either Cassius or Cassian but she came out pink as well and am just not that keen on Cassandra

at least Lockets got to use it

atlasthebrute · 12/12/2009 13:58

Thank you lovely people for your views. It is a cool name so I think we'll definitely be using it if baby is a boy. Just have to think up a good girl's name now... any ideas?!

I am having this for DC5, I love it. I am not sure if it will be the first or second name yet.

GhoulsAreLoud · 12/12/2009 14:49

I would assume Cass was a girl. Or a cat.

MaggieNollaig · 12/12/2009 16:30

Cass eee uss. that's how i'd say it.

this name is becoming quite popular. i was looking at the stats that somebody posted the other night and this name is more popular than my son's name. which is more mainstream sounding. or perceived to be more popular i'd say.

i don't love it but i don't dislike it either. I love julius. That's much nicer and pronunciation is more obvious.

MaggieNollaig · 12/12/2009 16:31

ps yes, Cass is too feminine.

GetDownYouWillFall · 12/12/2009 17:38

my cousin's little boy is Caspar and everyone calls him Cas. He's not scarred.

MaggieNollaig · 12/12/2009 18:03

Caspar is lovely.

serenity · 12/12/2009 18:05

For me (and a whole load of other fans of a particular show) Cas is a rather fetching, decidedly male, angel. It's what you know and what you get used to. I'll always see it as a masculine nickname now.

Pronounce as looks, not Cash-us.

Perhaps Cass is slightly feminine, still like Cassius however, though have seen this come up a little more recently.

I don't think Cass is feminine. We once were going to call a prospective dd Casandra, and the nn would have been Cassie, not Cass (then our landlord got a small hairy dog called Cassandra, and so we went off the name - although this was some ten odd years before we actually had children!). I'd also pronounce Cassius as it looks.

sonniebonnie · 13/12/2009 10:26

Just looked up the name on Wikipedia (as I hadn't heard it before) and apparently it derives from the Latin 'Cassus', meaning 'empty', 'poor', 'robbed'.

Of course, people don't necessarily care about meanings, but I thought I'll share it anyway.

Cass/Cassie sounds a little feminine imo, but Cassius is nice, pronounced Cass-ius (not Cashus!).

Shame about the meaning, though.
