Biblical girl's names please

So far all our children (and most of my side of the family) have names from the bible, because of the great meanings and inspirational characters. I have loads of boys names lined up, because there's loads of males in the bible but not so many females!

Esthers, Naomi, Lydia and Hannah have already been used in the family so they're not an option.

My absolute favourite is Eva but people are saying that's too popular at the moment (I don't know any in real life though).

Any thoughts?

How about

Elizabeth
Lois
Abigail
Keziah

or

Hope
Grace
(etc)

colditz · 17/11/2009 18:14

Hannah means "Favoured grace" or "Graced by God"

Which I think is lovely

woowa, we are all SO intrigued now! Sounds very dramatic if it's never been used before - Tekoa? Elim? Ur? The Dead Sea?

I agree that name meanings are very important and has put me off some lovely names in the past. When we have told our DCs what their names mean (as well as the characters they were named after), they seem to really be proud of it and will bring it up at different intervals. In fact, if I tell DS1 off for getting too giddy, he says 'But Mum, Isaac means laughter!'

This is so useful - I thought I should just keep trawling through the names on the internet, but somehow having a discussion about it and hearing different names written in context is so much better than just reading a list

Sarah, Eve, Ruth, Naomi, Hannah, Miriam, Abigail, Bethany, Dinah, Esther, Tamar, Rebekah, Leah, Rachel, Deborah, Mary, Martha, Elizabeth, Anna, Phoebe, Lydia.

Probably wouldn't go for Oholah or Oholibah unless you want her to have a complex!

boodleboot · 18/11/2009 16:26

Keziah is GORGEOUS.....Kizzy for NN. love it.

woowa · 18/11/2009 17:46

nope estar - not Sharon!! Funny isn't it that a place in the Bible, a pretty one too - as in "roses of Sharon" has become a name that we wouldn't dare use. Wonder if there are any more like that?

I wish i COULD say what bible place name we will give DC if it is a DD...so tempting...but am going to resist as I don't want anyone to say "that's awful" before it's born (MN is a place of honesty ). Instead I just want to shock my family when it's born. Mean old me!

Apologies - Keturah was Abraham's wife - got it wrong!

I love Bathsheba, but have never come across one. I guess it's because of what she was involved in, but then, none of the bible people lived perfect lives (apart from the Lord Jesus, of course!).

Anyone fancy starting a thread of unusual biblical boys names just for fun!?

estar · 18/11/2009 18:25

Sharon is my mum's name - as in 'Share-on' not 'Shah-ron'. She was named after the biblical place and hates it when people mispronounce her name but I've only ever met one other person who pronounces it that way, so she is in the minority!

We have four boys with biblical names and we are soooo tempted (well, ok, I'm tempted, and am trying to get DH to go along with me), if we have a girl this time, to send a birth announcement out that says something like 'It's a boy! We are pleased to announce the arrival of Methuselah Zerrubbabel' and see what reaction we get before 'fessing up and giving the real gender and name

Too cruel?

IME it's hard to say you hate a name once the child has actually been named it, so yu are bound to get back 'Methuselah, how, er unusual "

Carmel is another lovely place name that's sometimes used for a girl.

But she'd be bound to get called Caramel

MissM · 19/11/2009 16:20

I had a friend called Carmel (she was Irish Catholic) and I thought it was a lovely name. But yes, she did get called Caramel...

MissM · 19/11/2009 16:24

How about Shoshana? You could call her Shoshi for short.

hepzihardy1 · 23/11/2009 14:48

What about Hepzibah or Dorcas

mrscrocoduck · 23/11/2009 15:04

mathanxiety · 23/11/2009 16:22

Zipporah?

Avendesora · 23/11/2009 17:51

Adah Zillah Kezia

Gracie123 · 23/11/2009 18:52

Tamar and Abigail are my favourite biblical names for a girl.
Debra has a great story and strong character though.
I really like Dinah, and although her story in the bible is not a happy one, the name in hebrew mean 'God has judged and vindicated me' which I think is lovely.

Bathsheba · 24/11/2009 08:00
