Biblical girl's names please

So far all our children (and most of my side of the family) have names from the bible, because of the great meanings and inspirational characters. I have loads of boys names lined up, because there's loads of males in the bible but not so many females!

Esthers, Naomi, Lydia and Hannah have already been used in the family so they're not an option.

My absolute favourite is Eva but people are saying that's too popular at the moment (I don't know any in real life though).

Any thoughts?

Magdalene
Talitha
Elizabeth
Priscilla
Deborah
Judith
Tamar
Jemima(h)

Not necessarily all to my taste but trying to find some not suggested. Good luck!

themothershipcalling · 16/11/2009 19:58

Wow, is Eva actually popular...?! Maybe I might find some stuff with my DD's name on!

estar · 16/11/2009 20:02

Ooo, do you have an Eva, mothership? How old is she and have you come across any others? I keep trying to distance myself from it but the more I look at other names, the more I like it!

You could try a female version of a boy's name, eg:
Josephine/Josie
Joanna
Jaime
Petra
but I do love susannah too

Oops, can't have Ruth, it's DH's ex .

Tempted by Tabitha, Elizabeth (very versatile), Bethany or Phoebe. Will roll them around my head for a bit.

Agree with custy's point - some names you can only get away with if your child is extremely cute (which my others are, btw, but we all worry that the cute genes might run out, don't we?)

Also think you've safely steered me away from Lilith...

The other thing I thought of was names that were biblical but not people's names, like Grace (also incredibly popular at the moment, apparently!) Any others along those lines?

Yes, cloelia, I wanted to explore some of those too, good idea.

Anna means 'grace' or Annabel means 'beautiful grace'. We chose Annabel for DD2's middle name because we like Grace but it didn't go with her other names.

themothershipcalling · 16/11/2009 20:17

She's 22 months and I have to say her name really suits her! I like it because it's different without being too odd - apart from my cousin having an Evie I don't know any babies with her name or variations.

Go for it

sweetkitty · 16/11/2009 20:17

I have a
Abigail
Talia
Bethany

all biblical names, first two old Testament (even though Talia has been accused of being a chav name on mn), third one New Testament

also like

Naomi (opps you have one)
Rachel
Leah
Anna
Sarah
Rebecca

Fivesetsofschoolfees · 16/11/2009 20:27

Chloe
Susanna
Tamara
Petra (not a bible character, but feminine form of Peter).

blithedance · 16/11/2009 20:29

Grace! Depends how far you want to take it along those lines

Faith
Charity
Prudence
Joy
Patience
Verity
Mercy/Clemency
Constance (how classy!)
Felicity
Honor

but maybe not Chastity, Temperance, Innocence, Modesty etc

Would love to see someone use Bathsheba, which has the literary connection too, but probably won't happen.

susiey · 16/11/2009 20:33

we have an Annalise which mean grace and consecrated to God

Anna was pretty cool in the bible but we wanted a longer name so chose Annalise instead

meltedchocolate · 16/11/2009 20:36

Go with Felicity (meaning Happiness)!! Thats what my DD (if i ever have one) will be called. It is beautiful.

Naomi is great too

My first and middle names are biblical names, chosen because of a bible story

Swaliswan · 16/11/2009 20:40

Oh, my nan's middle name is 'Love'. She hates it, but it is along the lines of 'Grace'.

katsh · 16/11/2009 20:55

I have a Phoebe and a Tabitha and like Joanna and Martha. We joked about calling ds "jesus" - can't get much more biblical than that, and it would have been worth it just for the look on our mothers' faces

TheMysticMasseuse · 16/11/2009 21:03

please don't call her salome

I like Dinah, Myriam, Sara, ABigail, Susannah, Rachel etc. Also Bathsheba if you want something unusual

estar · 16/11/2009 21:06

Mercy. Does that work? Mercy Hadn't thought of that before.

Where was Talia in the bible? Never noticed that one, I quite like it.

I do love Eva though. I imagine it being sooo cute for a little toddler but so classy for a grown woman (thinking of Evas Mendes, Longoria and Cassidy). Trouble is someone close to me (not pregnant yet) has her heart set on Evie so I'm not sure if it counts as stealing...

Lois - was only after naming DD2 that I discovered it was a biblical name.

But also love the name Eva, I think it's different enough from Evie.

randomimposter · 16/11/2009 21:21

LOVE Mercy (wouldn't work with our surname)... top girl's name for me is Clemency...

estar · 16/11/2009 21:32

Ooo, katsh, I like Phoebe and Tabitha together, how cute. Do you have nicknames for them?

OP posts:
FrameyMcFrame · 16/11/2009 21:32

Anne, Catherine, Agnes, Bernadette, Angele, Angela, Josephine?

forehead · 16/11/2009 21:43

Gabriella or Peace

turningintogranny · 16/11/2009 21:49

Cherith

MissM · 16/11/2009 21:52

Eva is lovely. I know lots of Evies but no Evas. Go for it if you love it that much.

I think Grace is more used as a middle name these names no? My DD's middle name is Grace but I've not heard it as a first name (will probably hear loads of mums yelling it across the supermarket now).

My personal Biblical favourites are Ruth, Esther and Abigail, but you already have Esther.
