I met a lovely little Greta at the weekend and now I can't stop thinking about it.

I think I prefer it to my current favourite Eliza.

WDYT?

I really like both names but Greta edges it for me. It was on our list for dc2 (but it turns out its a boy)

I love the look of it written down but I'm not sure how I'd pronounce it - 'gretta' or 'greeta'?

Eliza is lovely too. How about Frieda or Lena?

ImSoNotTelling · 03/11/2009 13:29

I have a Greta we pronounce it Gretta which I'm sure is right but lots of people do say Greeta, even after I've just said "this is Gretta" but I can't really get in a lather about it!

Other similar names (if you're going with a theme): Astrid, Ingrid, Freya (popular), Heidi (makes me sing the theme tune in my head when i hear it but if we have another DD I think it might be the one!) they're the ones on our list anyway

Indith · 03/11/2009 13:37

I know one of each, have just recently met the Greta (pronounced Gretta). I love them both.

thell · 03/11/2009 13:46

Oooh, pretty!
Eliza is fab too.
ISNT, your list is lovely

ja9 · 03/11/2009 13:48

I really really like Greta. It was on my list for dd.... in the end i just couldn't do it though. if i knew a rl greta then i'd be more up for it. go for it!

having said that Eliza is very sweet too...

ja9 · 03/11/2009 13:49

ISNT - funny as heidi was on our list too - but i would never have thought of them as a similar type of name. Interesting!

ImSoNotTelling · 03/11/2009 13:58

Um.... running around on a mountain names?

bandgeek · 03/11/2009 14:02

It's my name I've had a lifetime of people mis-spelling and mispronouncing it (I'm Gretta) but it gets me noticed as I have always been the only one in my class, my office etc.

Personally, I prefer Eliza (it on my list if I ever have another girl) but does anyone ever like their own name?

MrsVik · 03/11/2009 14:10

I prefer Greta - very nice!

Vivia · 03/11/2009 14:11

Seededbiatch · 03/11/2009 14:12

Lovely name.

Eliza is lovely too!

henryhuggins · 03/11/2009 14:26

love it

canihaveapeeinpeacepleasebob · 03/11/2009 14:46

It's my mum's name. I think it's lovely, it's pronounce Gretta, but everyone calls her Greeta.
She does get fed up of explaining to people who think shes called Rita.
My dh really wants her to get a job in Asda, so he can hear her say "Hello my names Greeta and I'm your greeter."!!

ImSoNotTelling · 03/11/2009 14:54

Why do people pronounce it greeta? I always thought it was gretta, and am fairly sure that's the correct way to pronounce it, but 9 people out of 10 say "greeta" when I introduce DD.

It was greta "gretta" garbo surely, which is the famous one.

Any ideas?

canihaveapeeinpeacepleasebob · 03/11/2009 15:00

I've no idea why people say greeta, Greta is much nicer.

MrsVik · 03/11/2009 15:03

Here in Germany it's pronounced something like 'graeta'. Almost like 'grater' - but with the 'r' pronounced right at the back of the throat, so maybe that's where the long vowel has snuck in. To me it definitely sounds like a German name.

I guess the more popular it gets in the UK, the more people will pronounce it the British way!

ImSoNotTelling · 03/11/2009 15:04

Maybe they are doing it on purpose, to punish me for choosing "forrin" names, rather than proper english ones

biscuitbear · 03/11/2009 16:49

I know a 5 year old Italian Greta. It was cute when she was a baby and a really great name on an older child too. I think its lovely.

I think they pronounce it similar to the German pronunciation - graeta with a rolled R.

MaggieMonday · 03/11/2009 17:01

I love it.

ja9 · 03/11/2009 17:12

ISNT - that must be it lol!

ImSoNotTelling · 03/11/2009 17:15

Mrsvik - sort of like "greytah"? I have heard that as well - I used to work with a lot of German people so maybe that was where... This greeta stuff is just bananas though.

birdofthenorth · 03/11/2009 17:40

Lovely name. Maybe you could spell it Gretta to avoid any confusion!

Jujubean77 · 03/11/2009 17:42

pretty pretty!
