I met a lovely little Greta at the weekend and now I can't stop thinking about it.

I think I prefer it to my current favourite Eliza.

WDYT?

isn't it short for Margaret?

Love Frieda and Lena that someone mentioned

liliputlady · 03/11/2009 21:37

Really pretty. I love Gretel too, but I wasn't that adventurous!

ImSoNotTelling · 03/11/2009 21:39

Yes Gretel I love it as well but agree it would be a brave move!

twolittlekings · 03/11/2009 21:41

I like them both. I think for me Eliza has the edge though.

hulabula · 03/11/2009 21:54

I know a German Greta (in her 70s now) and her name is pronounced Greh-ta.

ImSoNotTelling · 03/11/2009 21:57

Quite right hulabula. Quite right.

Next time someone says "how is little greeta" I shall punch them in the face.

Or might that be an over-reaction?

mathanxiety · 04/11/2009 03:28

People who pronounce it Greeta do so because they see it written with one T and misapply the spelling rule regarding long vowel sounds and single consonants, probably not knowing it's a German name, with different pronunciation rules. They also don't listen very well, if you've just introduced Greta and they still get it wrong.

I love Frieda and Lena too.

hulabula · 04/11/2009 07:31

I recently met a Peta (female) and her name is pronounced Pee-ta.

twolittlekings · 04/11/2009 10:55

I used to read the "Wings over witchend" books when I was a kid (Malcome Saville) and there was a petronella in there (shortened to Peta) which I always liked. Never had a DD though and not massively keen on Peter for a boy.

teameric · 04/11/2009 11:04

Greta is beautiful, I would like this if I had another DD, but DH isn't keen on it unfortunately

qumquat · 06/11/2009 17:36

It would never occur to me to say Greeta, I'm really surprised the pronunciation's an issue. A close friend's daughter is called Greta and I love it, and I've never heard of anyone mispronouncing it. Classy and elegant.

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 08/11/2009 19:08

Greta's beautiful but I prefer Gretta.

cory · 08/11/2009 22:34

Greta Garbo was a Swede, so the correct pronunciation would be a long -e-, the same sound as in French ete (the season, can't do the accents online). Definitely not Gretta.

DaisyFlower161 · 14/02/2018 10:39

This is my name, correct pronunciation Greeta, it used to be a popular Jewish name, probably from Eastern Europe. I like my name but do seem to spend a fair amount of my time correcting pronunciation from Gretta!!

MammieBear · 14/02/2018 11:29

Lovely name

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/02/2018 12:07

Greta is fabulous !

Barre · 14/02/2018 12:24

Greta is amazing!

mathanxiety · 15/02/2018 07:43

ZOMBIE ALERT

Kokeshi123 · 15/02/2018 23:27

I love it. I have only ever heard it pronounced "gretta."

pipilangstrumpf · 16/02/2018 07:37

It's Greh-ta, not Gretta.

Meemzinha · 16/02/2018 08:58

Don't like it at all!

daisypond · 16/02/2018 09:24

Eliza is better than Greta. I lump Greta along with names like Ingrid, Astrid, Heidi, Freya, etc - they're just seem a bit silly in English.

BakedBeans47 · 16/02/2018 23:14

I think Greta is not nice, also makes me think of Gretna
