Arthur or Albert?

Both just new entries on a list of names we are unsure of; but given the recent trend in "Grandad's name", these two don't apear to have made the top 100 yet - opinions?

Also, DH thinks Albert will alwas be a Bertie - is he right?

Either are lovely, I wanted Arthur for DS but DH said no.

GrimmaTheNome · 23/10/2009 14:15

My dear dad was an Albert and was never abbreviated. If you want an abbreviation and don't like Bert(ie) it could be Al I suppose.

strongblackcoffee · 23/10/2009 14:15

Both lovely! I have an Albert - we always intended him to be Bert, but never got round to it, and he's just Albert. He also has a friend at creche who's an Albert, and he's Albie.

Fruitbatlings · 23/10/2009 14:17

Both! My friends have just called their baby Albert - Albie for short.
I also love Arthur, it's DS2's middle name

teameric · 23/10/2009 14:19

love Albert and Albie for short is lovely

strongblackcoffee · 23/10/2009 14:24

hooray for grandad names - love them!

strongblackcoffee · 23/10/2009 14:24

dammit

Mammina · 23/10/2009 14:26

Albert - Albie as a nn is really cute

pippylongstockings · 23/10/2009 14:39

I really like both and would be hard pushed to choose. They were on my short list but FIL said they were both 'east-enders mockney' names - Whatever that means ?

I think Albie as a shortening is great - and I really quite like Bert too.

Arthur is a bit more classic.

issy123 · 23/10/2009 15:46

Pefer Albert/ Albie, but I have one, he is 10 months old and gorgeous.

susie100 · 23/10/2009 15:49

Ooooooh I love them both!

PumpkinJollster · 23/10/2009 15:58

oh bless
dad was Arthur, his big bro was Albert (called Alf, as their dad was Albert too)

PippyLS we ARE Eastenders and not your Mockney kind either

I have used Arthur as DS1 middle name, and Bertie is our first cat...

LOVE the traditional names.

Zil131 · 23/10/2009 16:51

Oooh wasn't exepcting this positive response!! DH is half German and a research scientist - so was going to sell it to him on the 'Einstein' connection... Think I will push harder

Like both, but marginally prefer Arthur.

ParanoiaBigPumkinDestroyer · 23/10/2009 17:13

I have a beautiful bouncing 8 month old called Albert. He's Al for short but we use the full name a lot.

strongblackcoffee · 23/10/2009 18:35

My friend has an Arthur, and a german friend of hers laughed heartily at the name choice and said (with heavy german accent) 'ha ha, it is funny, in germany ve sink Arthur is very old man name'. She had to explain it was the actually just same here...

Albie and Bertie are great

Clary · 23/10/2009 19:40

I know two Arthurs and no Alberts under 12 FWIW.

Don't think either would therefore be classed as popular (I know a lot of children ).

DS1 who happens to be sitting nearby says he prefers Arthur. So do I but both are nice.

pugwash · 24/10/2009 21:00

My Nephew is an Albie, not short for anything though.

I hate granddad names just awful...sorry but I can't imagine a baby or a teenager called Albert or Arthur

dizzydixies · 24/10/2009 21:14

I love Arthur nn Art and Albie for Albert is fab too

why not see which one suits him best

DougalDoneGood · 24/10/2009 23:29

Great names, both of them

LaDiDaDi · 24/10/2009 23:31

I like both of them, prefer the nn of Albie to Art but prefer the formal name Arthur to Albert.

That's not very helpful, is it?

hatwoman · 24/10/2009 23:32

I know 2 Arthurs and an Albert. plus my dog.

Clary · 24/10/2009 23:34
