The more I think about it, the more I like this name for a DD, if this baby (due in spring) happens to be one. It sits nicely alongside DS's name, and goes with their surname. However, the Unity Mitford association is a big reason not to use it, and I am just wondering what people think about that aspect.

I didn't know of any Nazi connections, so my initial response was 'hippy, dippy, probably got a brother called Leaf' IYSWIM. I think it's a grower.

I have never heard of anyone called Unity in my life and I am from Ireland...
I personally wouldn't use that name- doesnt really sound like a real name to me, but, if you like it then use it....its your baby!

I dont think its horrible though.....just wouldnt use it myself IYSWIM...same way that you might not ue a name that I would use.

I was asking specifically what people think about the Mitford aspect, because I'm trying to get a sense of how paramount that association is in people's minds. Thanks to everyone who answered ... but as I said in the OP, I already know that I like the name, so I don't really need to hear unvarnished condemnation of it unrelated to my question! (In any case, that's not very useful when I don't have any context ? those who think it's "hideous" might well choose a name I really don't like, so hey ho).

IMove, do you think it's such a weird idea it's troll-like? I am almost flattered!

I thought Mitford but I wouldn't assume that you'd chosen the name out of admiration for her. Diana Mitford was just as right-wing and arguably more connected with a far-right movement but no-one would reject the Diana on those grounds.

If you like it, go for it.

Dorothea I don't really think the Mitford connection would be uppermost in peoples minds.

I like those "virtue" names, like Faith, Hope, Mercy, (but not Chastity)

IMove, I just have been getting the impression lately that whenever a poster simply puts with no other reply it means they are somewhat skeptical about the OP being genuine. I figured that was what you meant. Sorry if I misunderstood

I love the name but my first thought on reading the thread title was Mitford. I think that's because (as someone already said) there have been so few famous Unitys (Unities?) whereas there are many famous Roberts and so one doesn't automatically think Mugabe.

Well do avoid Valkyrie as a middle name. I can't really believe that her parents chose such an interesting name for her, especially as all their other children had pretty unremarkable names (Jessica, Diana, Pamela, Nancy and Tom).

Yeah I agree nooka, it's kind of an anomaly. I suppose maybe it used to be a more widely used name than it is now? Or they were just feeling a bit adventurous for a change ...

I have to say though, whoever pointed out "you nitty" has given me pause for thought. Where I'm originally from nits are not called nits (they are just called lice) so I just hadn't thought about it. This LO will grow up in the UK so perhaps having "nitty" in her name is a bad idea

I do still like the name, but on balance we probably won't use it because I can imagine it might be quite a hard sell to DP. Will mention it though...

Well it invokes a great Queen Latifah song for me more strongly than 'ole Unity Mitford.

I thought of Unity Mitford too, but I am a little obsessed with the Mitfords (not Unity, particularly - I am more partial to Decca, and have often thought about that as a name should I have a DD).

I think probably most people won't think about it once you have a small person running around with that name. Not sure how you might abbreviate it, should that be something you'd like to do - I always think names of 3 syllables are too much to yell across a playground but that could just be me
