Unity

The more I think about it, the more I like this name for a DD, if this baby (due in spring) happens to be one. It sits nicely alongside DS's name, and goes with their surname. However, the Unity Mitford association is a big reason not to use it, and I am just wondering what people think about that aspect.

I didn't know of any Nazi connections, so my initial response was 'hippy, dippy, probably got a brother called Leaf' IYSWIM. I think it's a grower.

I have never heard of anyone called Unity in my life and I am from Ireland...
I personally wouldn't use that name- doesnt really sound like a real name to me, but, if you like it then use it....its your baby!

lovemybabyboy · 14/10/2009 13:01

I dont think its horrible though.....just wouldnt use it myself IYSWIM...same way that you might not ue a name that I would use.

DorotheaPlentighoul · 14/10/2009 13:22

at typical wide range of opinions.

I was asking specifically what people think about the Mitford aspect, because I'm trying to get a sense of how paramount that association is in people's minds. Thanks to everyone who answered ... but as I said in the OP, I already know that I like the name, so I don't really need to hear unvarnished condemnation of it unrelated to my question! (In any case, that's not very useful when I don't have any context ? those who think it's "hideous" might well choose a name I really don't like, so hey ho).

IMove, do you think it's such a weird idea it's troll-like? I am almost flattered!

scaryclaireyboo · 14/10/2009 13:40

This is my association - much better

Hulababy · 14/10/2009 13:43

I wouldn't have immediately made the connection. However, it isn't a name I particularly like, sorry.

llaregguBOO · 14/10/2009 13:45

I thought Mitford but I wouldn't assume that you'd chosen the name out of admiration for her. Diana Mitford was just as right-wing and arguably more connected with a far-right movement but no-one would reject the Diana on those grounds.

If you like it, go for it.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 14/10/2009 13:46

Dorothea I don't really think the Mitford connection would be uppermost in peoples minds.

I like those "virtue" names, like Faith, Hope, Mercy, (but not Chastity)

DorotheaPlentighoul · 14/10/2009 13:49

Scaryclairey, that's fab -- I didn't know of her.

Didn't say anything about troll Confused

DorotheaPlentighoul · 14/10/2009 17:11

IMove, I just have been getting the impression lately that whenever a poster simply puts with no other reply it means they are somewhat skeptical about the OP being genuine. I figured that was what you meant. Sorry if I misunderstood

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 14/10/2009 17:29

ah... no, sorry.

Someone said 'It's better than Trinity!' and I just took offense so said

Ah I see!

I love this name!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 14/10/2009 19:54

I love the name but my first thought on reading the thread title was Mitford. I think that's because (as someone already said) there have been so few famous Unitys (Unities?) whereas there are many famous Roberts and so one doesn't automatically think Mugabe.

nooka · 15/10/2009 02:33

Well do avoid Valkyrie as a middle name. I can't really believe that her parents chose such an interesting name for her, especially as all their other children had pretty unremarkable names (Jessica, Diana, Pamela, Nancy and Tom).

ViktoriaMac · 15/10/2009 02:45

I really like it.

DorotheaPlentighoul · 15/10/2009 08:09

Yeah I agree nooka, it's kind of an anomaly. I suppose maybe it used to be a more widely used name than it is now? Or they were just feeling a bit adventurous for a change ...

OP posts:
DorotheaPlentighoul · 15/10/2009 08:11

I have to say though, whoever pointed out "you nitty" has given me pause for thought. Where I'm originally from nits are not called nits (they are just called lice) so I just hadn't thought about it. This LO will grow up in the UK so perhaps having "nitty" in her name is a bad idea

I do still like the name, but on balance we probably won't use it because I can imagine it might be quite a hard sell to DP. Will mention it though...

TigerBitesAgain · 15/10/2009 08:12

No, it's the name of a loopy Nazi. And lots of people will have heard of it, QED this thread.

Podrick · 15/10/2009 16:23

Well it invokes a great Queen Latifah song for me more strongly than 'ole Unity Mitford.

jamandjerusalem · 16/10/2009 13:46

I thought of Unity Mitford too, but I am a little obsessed with the Mitfords (not Unity, particularly - I am more partial to Decca, and have often thought about that as a name should I have a DD).

I think probably most people won't think about it once you have a small person running around with that name. Not sure how you might abbreviate it, should that be something you'd like to do - I always think names of 3 syllables are too much to yell across a playground but that could just be me
