Posted last week about Rudy.. the other name under consideration for baby #4 due in 3 weeks is Eli (eelye) so a shortened version of Elias I guess. Opinions appreciated..

My grandfather's name. In his case short for Eliahu and pronounced ellie (but abroad so no confusion re girl name). Like the other pronunciation as well

BellaBear · 08/10/2009 20:25

Or could be short for Elijah, which is the anglicisation of Eliahu

wheresclaire · 08/10/2009 20:29

Really like Elijah/Eli.

AttillaTheHan · 08/10/2009 20:29

I love it.

AnyFuleKno · 08/10/2009 20:35

I like Eli but not Elijah.

mamaolivia · 08/10/2009 20:58

I have a 12 week old little Elijah who we call Eli, and although I had some second thoughts at the end of my preg about it, am bloody glad I chose it as still think it's a fab name - go for it!

tummytickler · 08/10/2009 21:07

My 7 year old is called Eli (Elijah).
I love it - obviously!
I like Elias too.

LynetteScavo · 08/10/2009 21:12

I like Eli.

Biblical: from a Hebrew word meaning "height". Eli was the name of the preist and judge who brught up the future prophet Samuel. It ws especially popular among Puritans in teh 17th century.

alkar · 08/10/2009 21:13

My great grandfathers name and I love it, will definately consider it if I have another DS

differentWitch · 08/10/2009 21:15

Like Eli and Elias.

Wilts · 08/10/2009 21:15

I read that as ' what do you think about Elf' and then thought, well nothing would surprise me on the name front these days .

I know an Eli, short for Elijah- although he is never called his full name, I like them both

pointyhat · 08/10/2009 21:17

No, I don't

samuel447 · 08/10/2009 21:34

I had a look on the i village name finder and it could be written Eli or Ely.. did you immediately know the pronunciation of it as Eli? Which is easier? I think we would go for it as a name in it's own right, rather than Elias (which I do like but a little too formal for us)

Wilts · 08/10/2009 21:38

I personally think Eli is easier. I also think it looks nicer that Ely when written down.

Wilts · 08/10/2009 21:38

than Ely

Must preview more

SmokingKnickers0nMahead · 08/10/2009 21:39

I don't like it.

DippyDino · 08/10/2009 21:43

Love it! One of my favourite boys names.

Thissideofchannel · 08/10/2009 21:45

Elijah/Elias are both lovely (and much, much nicer than Rudolph/Rudi) imo!

pranma · 08/10/2009 22:51

Sadly he will be forever Eli Dingle from Emmerdale
I like both Elijah and Elias

skihorse · 09/10/2009 05:19

It's a bit "children of the corn" for me - and the GP will never get it - the Hebrew reference I mean.

Bathsheba · 09/10/2009 08:14

It doesn;t have to be short for anything - its a perfectly acceptable Biblican name in its own right...

Short names don;t have to have long versions...

Jodyray · 09/10/2009 19:37

My Bro and SIL are due November and have picked Eli. Personally i love it, but some members of both families have really given them shit saying its awful! Eli Dingle, Eli (Newts schizo alterego) in Hollyoaks.....but who cares i got grief when i called my son Blake but now people have got used to it.

trixiechick · 11/10/2009 12:18

don't mind the emmerdale references it's a fabulous name and if my dd had been a boy as we were 99% sure she was she would be Eli now. I don't watch Emmerdale and didn't even know there was an Eli in it. We were going to go for Elijah as the full neme tho.

vess · 12/10/2009 05:14

Elias is nice and more masculine.
Just Eli is too girly.

cityangel · 12/10/2009 11:00

I would only pronounce the way you do if its spelt Ely, but then that because there are are loads of Ellie's (female) in my nursery.

I like Elias with Eli as a nickname.

There's also Elliot
