Only 3 weeks to go and still undecided. I really liked India but my sister in law told me that India together with our surname sounded like an Indian restaurant! Its put me off it!

India Arie (singer) is cool, though.

RainRainGoAway · 23/12/2009 12:45

Its a bit... IMO.

I know a few Indias and they are always from the 'burbs. In fact, the less they are connected to the actual country India, the more likely they have been called it! If you have a deep, spiritual connection with a place then great. But if you are from Weston-super-Mare and given this name and your parents have been no closer to India than Kent, then its a bit yick.

MamaLazarou · 23/12/2009 14:14

People called India live in Primrose Hill, go on gap years and borrow daddy's Porsche.

It's a nice name, though. Just frightfully posh.

MadBadandCoveredinTinsel · 23/12/2009 14:19

Round here, the name India signifies "my parents work in the meeja"

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 23/12/2009 14:25

India is not a child's name IMO. I think it's pretentious.

Twinkleandpearls · 23/12/2009 14:27

I like it but I am an utter ponce. It depends on what your surname is as well. My dd would sound stupid being called India with her frightfully common Irish surname.

LastOfTheMulledWine · 23/12/2009 14:28

I know two. Lovely MNer's little girl, but she gets called something else entirely.

And the most beautiful woman in the world. Long, swishy strawberry blonde hair, porcelain skin, big expressive eyes and an amazing figure.

Indias, ime, are bloody beautiful.

FoxyRevenger · 23/12/2009 14:30

I dunno, I think it's seen as quite pretentious now, used by people who wish they had a deep spiritual connection with the country but were too busy at Oxford to actually visit it. Sorry.

shonaspurtle · 23/12/2009 14:33

In the Scottish Names 2009 list there was a girl named Indieya. Don't do that.

Now someone's going to tell me that this is the correct Uzbek spelling of the name Jane.

Rindercella · 23/12/2009 14:34

LastOfTheMulledWine, I have to agree with you. DD is an absolute stunner (I may be biased, but it's true) and is called India. She has an abundance of dark curls and beautiful big dark eyes.

India is a beautiful name.

mathanxiety · 23/12/2009 16:24

It's better than Ireland, but I still wouldn't use it, for all of the reasons already posted. I love all the other names on your list, though. I know a Tatiana who is called Tate, and a Russian one who is Tania.

Hulababy · 23/12/2009 16:26

I like it. It was almost DD's middle name.

NiceShoes · 23/12/2009 16:30

Pretentious, up there with
Georgia
Dakota
Smacks of Poncey parents

Casserole · 23/12/2009 17:19

I like it, tho probably wouldn't use it for all the reasons given above, which are making me LOL!

Love it love it love it. Would choose if for my imminent DD. But have promised DH that DD in-utero can have middle name 'Honey' so will be accused of having a gone-with-the-wind Wilkes obsession if I propose India as a first name.

LittleMissBliss · 23/12/2009 17:51

Love it!

Know an India known as Indie
And an
Indiana (boy) also known as Indie

NiceShoes · 24/12/2009 05:57

Do people in India call their babies Bromsgrove or Finchley?

peacocks · 24/12/2009 06:05

No, it's very Courteney nowadays! What about Mali? I've had the Rhodesia conversation too.. and Mali popped into my head then....

peacocks · 24/12/2009 06:07

Actually, you know, it doesn't matter.. if all goes well and you have a healthy babe at the end you could call her Dustbin Lid and it would be perfect ..

If you like India, go with it and don't listen to me naysayers!

hf128219 · 24/12/2009 06:08

Bollocks.

NiceShoes · 24/12/2009 06:12

Name conveys a lot,and the wrong name is a curse. So you go ahead and name dd Dustbin Lid, Tampons, Scratchy Knickers all because it doesn't matter. See the impact of a bad name

peacocks · 24/12/2009 06:37

Oh sorry I didn't mean to upset anyone feelings obviously run high!

Kayzr · 24/12/2009 08:00

I love the name India, it has been on my girls shortlist for years!! But I have 2 boys so not used it yet.

Rindercella · 24/12/2009 09:33

Peacocks, you are of course absolutely right - if both parents love the name it really doesn't matter. NiceShoes' nickname conveys so much, but in this case delivers so little
